Heartwork Lyrics

Works of art, painted black
Magniloquent, bleeding dark
Monotonous palate, murky spectrum, grimly unlimited
Food for thought, so prolific
In contrasting shades, forcely fed
Abstraction, so choking, so provocative

A canvas to paint, to degenerate
Dark reflections - degeneration
A canvas to paint, to denigrate
Dark reflections, of dark foul light

Profound, aesthetic beauty
Or shaded, sensary corruption
Perceptions, shattered, splintered, mirroring
In deft taints, diluted, tinted
Spelt out, in impaired colour
Denigrating, going to paints to pain - not a pretty picture

Works of heart bleeding dark
Black, magniloquent art
Monotonous palate, murky spectrum, grimly unlimited
Prolific food for thought
Contrasting, fed with force
Abstraction, so choking, so provocative

Bleeding works of art
Seething work so dark
Seering words from the heart

Here's what this song means to ME! And its not up for debate..... It's about taking a dead body apart and using the remains for something pretty or artistic like....A CARCASS ALBUM! No, seriously though. To make art. To put animation from the remains that pollute the world when we die. What better way to bastardise a dead body then to use it for art. Actually, there is some reality to this observation of mine. There exists a museum in Europe (somewhere) where the dead are peeled apart and displayed. It's more of an education museum. But the remains of the people are REAL, and many of pieces are COMPLETE in that skin is the only thing missing. IN fact, there are muscle only pieces and bone only, etc. Carcass was nice enough to bring it to our stereo's in a way quite different, yet similar. So the meaning of the song? There's some beauty in death. And if theres none, there CAN be.

I think it's a play on words - heartwork/artwork. Almost every scouser would drop the h, so Jeff would probably have done the same. It seems to be advocating art 'from the heart', the complete opposite to the corporate dreck described in 'No Love Lost'.

i live in liverpool and scousers dont really drop the h sound, rather its quite pronounced...like, people take the piss out of it..."HArder" rather than "Arder". but interesting point nonetheless

Great great song, you can tell how these guys paved the way for the whole Gothenburg sound(whether that's a good thing or not...).

Steer did most of the work for Carcass, but Amott's influence on them cannot be denied. The 2 Amott albums are easily the best Carcass albums, and his songwriting and lead guitar contributions were awesome (i love Amott solos). Steer rules no doubt about it, but i personally think Amott is a better guitarist.
