Anchorless Lyrics

They called here to tell me that your're finally dying, through a veil of childish cries. Southern Manitoba prairie's pulling at the pant leg of your bad disguise. So why were you so anchorless? Shoebox full of photos; found a grainy mirror. Sunken cheeks and slender hands. Grocery lists and carbon-copied letters offer silence for my small demands. Hey how'd you get so anchorless? Got an armchair from your family home. Got your P.G. Wodehouse novels, and your telephone. Got your plates and stainless steel. Got that way of never saying what you really feel: so anchorless. A boat abandoned in some backyard. Anchorless in the small town that you lived and died in.

From an interview with John K.

"Anchorless has more to do with - it does in a way, but it has more to do - that's a very hopeful song for me and I know most people don't see it that way. It's about a family member close to me that died, and who our family had some conflicted feelings about. Who I really never got to know as well as I should have. And who just didn't seem able to express himself all his life. Didn't seem able to show affection and care for other people, and that song is about how I don't wanna end up that way, and how I resolve, like, not to be that way. Not follow that pattern that so many people have set for them. I think so many people are emotionally stunted by the places they live and the people who bring them up. So to a certain extent yeah, you have to leave that behind. You have to say like "I'm starting fresh right here - no baggage." So I'm trying to escape that."

what a terrific song this is!

I like the version by The Weakerthans much better than the version by Propaghandi, just because I do. This is one of those songs that gets stuck in your head and refuses to leave, so you'll be out in public and then just bust out with "Anchorless!"

This song has a nice melody, but the lyrics are really sad to me. It sounds like the singer is mocking the anchorless person, especially in the first lines
"They called here to tell me that you're finally dying, through a veil of childish cries."

I don't know.... It's just sad

I think both versions of the song are super cool. Isn't it beautiful how lyrics can be performed differently but still really awesome.
