i think it's about transitions in life.
this is definately a song about transitions that we all have to face in life!! he couldn't have said it any better.... "leaning on a broken fence btw past and present tense" awesome!! and "Circumnavigate this body of wonder and uncertainty. Armed with every previous failure, and amateur cartography" what a beautiful way of admitting mistakes we've all made in the past! this song is awesome. I can relate so easily to every word.
This is basically the story of my whole life. Yep.
I believe he is trying to say that he's trying to ready himself for whatever his future is bringing, but he feels so uncertain about everything- the past, the present- and he's overwhelmed. He's trying to put his feelings aside but he can't stop being himself.
