Golden Years Lyrics
Golden years, gold whop whop whop
Golden years, gold whop whop whop
Golden years, gold whop whop whop
Don't let me hear you say life's taking you nowhere, angel
Come get up my baby
Look at that sky, life's begun
Nights are warm and the days are young
Come get up my baby
There's my baby, lost that's all
Once I'm begging you save her little soul
Golden years, gold whop whop whop
Come get up my baby
Last night they loved you
Opening doors and pulling some strings, angel
Come get up my baby
In walked luck and you looked in time
Never look back, walk tall, act fine
Come get up my baby
I'll stick with you baby for a thousand years
Nothing's going to touch you in these golden years, gold
Golden years, gold whop whop whop
Come get up my baby
Some of these days, and it won't be long
Going to drive back down where you once belonged
In the back of a dream car twenty foot long
Don't cry my sweet, don't break my heart
Doing all right, but you got to get smart
Wish upon, wish upon, day upon day, I believe, oh lord
I believe all the way
Come get up my baby
There's my baby, lost that's all
Once I'm begging you save her little soul
Golden years, gold whop whop whop
Come get up my baby
Don't let me hear you say life's taking you nowhere, angel
Come get up my baby
Run for the shadows, run for the shadows
Run for the shadows in these golden years
I'll stick with you baby for a thousand years
Nothing's going to touch you in these golden years, gold

I kind of feel like this song is saying, "Hey, don't stress over where you've been and what you've been through, these are your golden years (your prime) so enjoy them!" I don't really know, but that's how I see it, as a positive song. Plus, this song is a killer dance song. Oh, Bowie, thank you for the wonderful music....
Written to accompany the dance in the motion picture A Knight's Tale????? This song is from 1976!!!!
Yeah this song was written to get his first wife to stop worrying about his descent into serious drug abuse while Bowie was in Los Angeles. Eek. Beautiful song though, what an artist.
@Silentfootfall look… people say a lot of things and Hollywood gossip, of course he’s not gonna be blunt about why he made the song. the undertones of the song are abundantly clear

The song was written for Bowie's first wife, Angela back in 1976. If you want to hear songs he wrote specifically for film (how the hell could you think this was written for a knight's tale?), check out the second half of Low or most of the Labrynth soundtrack.
I think this song about how fame will not ruin the marriage between him and his wife. I think certain lines in this song give it away. When did he divorce her anyway?
@OpinionHead 1980...not sure when it started falling apart....i'm assuming when he went to Berlin and got clean....he sobered up and realized....what the hell was I thinking!!?? lol!

I'm not quite sure if this was written for Angie. From a lot of what I've heard, theirs was mostly a marriage of convenience and he wasn't actually in love with her.
But then again, Angie was very much about fame (something this song alludes to heavily) so I'm probably wrong.
Wow. What a great 'doo-wop' song. Angie said it was written for her, but then again, Cher thought the same thing. This coke-induced Bowie made a great hit in this album. Enjoy the golden years...don't waste time, tomorrow's another day, all that bollocks. A great song, nonetheless.
Few people here got confused about Golden Years and the Knights Tale sound track... Golden Years was not made for the soundtrack but was a song Heath Ledger suggested. The director wanted to put "Getting' Jiggy with it" but thank god Ledger done away with that. The scene is cute, the movie is okay. But anyway, this song is amazing!
@KittyZiggy It was a joke, it amazes me how nobody can decipher humor on this site...lol
