David Bowie – Golden Years Lyrics 11 months ago
Yeah this song was written to get his first wife to stop worrying about his descent into serious drug abuse while Bowie was in Los Angeles. Eek. Beautiful song though, what an artist.

Yellow Magic Orchestra – Gradated Grey Lyrics 2 years ago
A beautiful description of what it’s like to travel by car in a place you’ve never been to. Noticing all the details and really looking at things because they’re unfamiliar. And somehow there’s a feeling of importance. That something is ‘getting closer.’ This song is great at describing a perceived lived experience in a mysterious, spiritual, minimalist way. Genius. RIP Takahashi and Sakamoto.

Devo – Speed Racer Lyrics 2 years ago
@[scoobydude:46759] I’m a big ‘Oh No’ fan as well. Incredibly underrated part of their journey. They really killed it with the synthetic textures, with their producer Roy Thomas Baker. RTB was very into layering, see Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody also produced by him. Oh No has an incredible lush analog synth sound; it was just before the DX7 and Fairlight CMI turned everything into cold gleaming digital glaciers. So it’s a warm and surprisingly deep study of analog synthesis, with Devo’s entire collection of instruments at that time. Possibly the best purely analog-synth album there ever was. (There’s some Linn Drum on it but other than that not much digital anything)

Devo – Happy Guy Lyrics 2 years ago
Always figured it was more like, he got into relationships with two different women. When he comes clean and tells both of them the truth, they are already aware and they all have a romp together in the bedroom, making him a ‘happy guy’. Knowing funny pervy Devo, that may be the story.

Men Without Hats – Antarctica Lyrics 2 years ago
Global climate change wasn’t yet known in most circles when this song was written. Maybe climate scientists had begun to speculate by that time, but certainly it was not the mainstream consensus.

The time the song was written we were all paranoid about nuclear war (see also Pop Goes the World). Antarctica is probably both a more general notion of emotional coldness. But also could be a reference to ‘nuclear winter’ which would occur after a major nuclear war.

Men Without Hats – Antarctica Lyrics 2 years ago
@[pookaboots:46757] I’m with you on this one. Their lyrics tend to be poetic and not specific. But clearly that opening line, ice age is here right in your town,’ sets it up that he is not literally talking about weather. He’s talking about coldness of spirit, lack of compassion, i think. Of course one of the great things about their lyrics is, they are texture for the music, and not totally clear in their meaning.

Erasure – Chorus Lyrics 2 years ago
There’s a clear message. Everytime i hear the chorus of Chorus, tears well up in my eyes. All the species of animals we have killed, all the ruin. Eventually if human beings can survive after mass ecological collapse, they will be living in a time when there are no bird songs, and no fish in the seas. The song is a warning, and asks every listener to think about what it will be like for future generations after we have killed most everything but ourselves. And it draws the direct line from our consumerist behavior (‘shop at home’) and these consequences.

The ending part, that ends ‘for a time when no-one’s cheating’ is about all the people in the world who desperately want to live in a world where corporate profit isn’t destroying our planet. I’m one of them.

At the end, the dawn chorus (the sound of birds in the morning) is just a memory. In the hearts and minds of mankind, who have to live with having destroyed God’s perfect creation.
