Mother Heroic Lyrics

Oh thou that bowest
Thy ecstatic face
Thy perfect sorrows
Are the world's to keep

Wherefore onto
Thy knee
Come we
With a prayer

Mother heroic
Mother glorious

Beholding in thy eye
Immortal tears

No comments on this one yet... not a well known song. Although I suspect this is written by Bjork to a general female divinity, eg Gaia or other, I can't help loving it as a hymn to the Mother of Christ, who at once is glorious, and sorrowful. pure and Blessed Virgin Mary.

I absolutely love this song. I kind of think either this song on Generous Palmstroke deserved to be on Vespertine and not made into b-sides- perhaps even in place of Heirloom. I like Heirloom, but I don't feel like it fits with the rest of the album as well as these two songs.

Anyway, this song is beautiful and deeply spiritual to me. I see it as a hymn to the Earth, anthropomorphized slightly as though she were singing to Gaia, to an Earth spirit or to an Oversoul.

Simple, gorgeous, delicate and resonant.
