I'm going to go with what Asz said, makes a lot of sense. Doesn't sound anything like a guitar, more like a voice or a kitty.

IDIOTS, you screwed up with just writing (Instrumental), its not, all they did to create this song was put a microphone in a mans mouth, then they rung his neck over and over. Thats right, this song is just a man gasping for air. This is reflecting on the song Ticks and Leeches "I hope you choke"...they put it there to complete the fibannacci seqeunce of the album...

Mantra: A sacred verbal formula repeated in prayer, meditation, or incantation, such as an invocation of a god, a magic spell, or a syllable or portion of scripture containing mystical potentialities.

The noise you hear in this track is actually made with Adam's guitar. He has some kind of sustainer he must have the same shit I got 'cuz I can do it, too.

Heres what Mantra really is: Tool fan Yaz (yazkuge@hotmail.com) found a 2001 interview with Maynard in the Japanese magazine "Buzz" where MJK stated for the first time in public ("a treat for the Japanese fans," he says) that the track "Mantra" is the sound of him squeezing one of his Siamese cats. The cat made such a weird noise that he immediately recorded this, played it real slow and made a track out of it.

I believe Mantra is a Buddhist form of meditation also in which you relax and say certain words over and over again.

this is a recording of a (elderly) woman humming a small song... do your homework ; reverse it and speed it up 60% or so

Krusty: BZZZZTTTT!!!1 It's the sound of Maynard James Keaton Squeezing his cat. Bart: You Mean Maynard James Keenan Krusty: Who is he? Bart: Lead singer of the greatest band on earth, Tool. Krusty: oh, boy.

No, Asz is correct. It's Maynard's siamese cat after being squeezed, then the sound produced being distorted and slowed down. I did exactly what you said using GoldWave, and even after trying 5 or 6 different speeds, it sounds closer to a cat. I almost hear occassional hisses, grunts, and "sighs" from it.

Asz's post comes directly from here, I think it's safer to say it's true: http://toolshed.down.net/faq/faq.html
