Everyone has secrets/skeletons in their closets. He wants to tell his, because he knows the other person wouldn't care and is kind. He wants to tell the other person to be honest. Once a secret is outed, they usually don't matter. The other person calms him, as he has anxiety and thoughts that won't stop. The other person would "fend off these demons", sending away the "ghosts that haunt him".
He's awakened with anxiety, which probably signifies a diagnosis of Panic Disorder.
He wants this person to keep him company, even in death, as they calm him like nothing else can.
