The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead (XTC cover) Lyrics
Peter Pumpkinhead came to town
Spreading wisdom and cash around
Fed the starving and housed the poor
Showed the Vatican what gold's for
But he made too many enemies
Of the people who would keep us on our knees
Hooray for Peter Pumpkin
Who'll pray for Peter Pumpkinhead?
Oh my!
Peter Pumpkinhead pulled them all
Emptied churches and shopping malls
Where he spoke, it would raise the roof
Peter Pumpkinhead told the truth
But he made too many enemies...
Who'll pray for Peter Pumkinhead?"
Peter Pumpkinhead brought to shame
Governments who would slur his name
Lusts and sex scandals failed outright
Peter merely said, "Any kind of love is all right"
But he made too many enemies
Of the people who would keep us on our knees
Hooray for Peter Pumpkin
Who'll pray for Peter Pumpkinhead?
Peter Pumpkinhead was too good
Had him nailed to a chunk of wood
He died grinning on live TV
Hanging there he looked a lot like you, and an awful lot like me!
But he made too many enemies
Of the people who would keep us on our knees
Hooray for Peter Pumpkin
Who'll pray for Peter Pumpkinhead?
Hooray for Peter Pumpkin
Who'll pray for Peter Pumpkin?
Hooray for Peter Pumpkinhead
Oh my, oh my, don't it make you want to cry, oh
Spreading wisdom and cash around
Fed the starving and housed the poor
Showed the Vatican what gold's for
Of the people who would keep us on our knees
Hooray for Peter Pumpkin

Its about Jesus
Spreading wisdom and cash around Fed the starving and housed the poor Showed the Vatican what gold's for..... yep
But he made too many enemies Of the people who would keep us on our knees.... the roman govournment had him hanged because they were worried.
Peter Pumpkinhead was too good Had him nailed to a chunk of wood..... he was nailed to the cross
Hanging there he looked a lot like you, and an awful lot like me!..... idk exactly but i love they way he sings that part.
thats what i think
can't believe nobody has commented on this song...fucking brilliant. says so much about our government today...what it is and what it ought to be.
Yeah, they're good lyrics. Shame that they're not written by Crash Test Dummies, and the XTC version is exactly the same but better.
@whapcapn This version omits the 2nd verse, "Peter Pumpkinhead pulled them all Emptied churches and shopping malls Where he spoke, it would raise the roof Peter Pumpkinhead told the truth"

only 2 comments? what a shame. I like this song. I think it's more about the Church then the government though- "Of the people who would keep us on our knees". But overall it's saying that even if someone did come along who did know the truth then he would be condemned for it (kind of like Jesus himself, how ironic, when its the Church doing the condemning in the song).
obviously about jesus and JFK. i always think of dumb and dumber when i hear the intro to this song though, brilliant song nonetheless!
Reid does a great job singing.
This version though omits the verse
"Peter Pumpkinhead pulled them all Emptied churches and shopping malls Where he spoke, it would raise the roof Peter Pumpkinhead told the truth"
