Something More (augustine's Confession) Lyrics
Augustine just woke up with a broken heart
All this time, he's never been awake before
At thirty-one, his whole world is a question mark
All this time, he's never been awake before
Watching dreams that he once had feed the flame inside his head
In a quiet desperation of the emptiness he says
'There's gotta be something more than what I’m living for
I'm crying out to You
There's gotta be something more than what I'm living for
I'm crying out to You'
Augustine, all his fears keep falling out
All this time, he's never been awake before
Finding out his old dreams aren't panning out
All this time, he's never been awake before
But he's mad to be alive and he's dying to be met
In a quiet desperation of the emptiness he says
There's gotta be something more than what I'm living for
I'm crying out to You
There's gotta be something more than what I'm living for
I'm crying out to You'
Hey, I give it all away
Nothing I was holding back remains
Hey, I give it all away
Looking for the grace of God today
There's gotta be something more than what I'm living for
I'm crying out to You
There's gotta be something more than what I'm living for
I'm crying out to You
There's gotta be something more than what I'm living for
I'm crying out to You
All this time, he's never been awake before
At thirty-one, his whole world is a question mark
All this time, he's never been awake before
In a quiet desperation of the emptiness he says
I'm crying out to You
There's gotta be something more than what I'm living for
I'm crying out to You'
All this time, he's never been awake before
Finding out his old dreams aren't panning out
All this time, he's never been awake before
In a quiet desperation of the emptiness he says
I'm crying out to You
There's gotta be something more than what I'm living for
I'm crying out to You'
Nothing I was holding back remains
Hey, I give it all away
Looking for the grace of God today
I'm crying out to You
There's gotta be something more than what I'm living for
I'm crying out to You
There's gotta be something more than what I'm living for
I'm crying out to You

I have to say, this has been one of my favorite Switchfoot songs. But anyway, Saint Augustine actually wrote an autobiography entitled "Confession", detailing his sinful early life, various attempts at other religions, and conversion to Chrstianity. (Basically a confession about his entire life.)
Saint Augustine was a huge sinner for the first half of his life, and then he realized his life lacked meaning and became a Christian and then one of the most influential Christian thinkers. I can't say for sure that he was 31 when he converted, but it would make sense.
this song has really grown on me. i absolutely love it now! the message is so great. i love how switchfoot can incorporate famous historical figures in their songs. it's about st. augustine realizing that he needs God and repents in the song. this also kinda reminds me of Meant to Live b/c it's about yearning for more than what's been offered to us. this particular song though points more to God.
Song bout a person who lived their whole life, but realized that they've been living for nothing. Everything this person tried led to emptiness. Finally, at 31, he realizes his need for God.
is this at all referring to saint augustine?
Well this song kicks...althought I think hiddendragons thoughts on Saint Augustine is probably the true meaning and inspiration for the song, I thought of it in a different when I heard it.
To me, it was describing the moment Augustine realized the world wasn't perfect, of the injustices in the world, and how he had been enclosed in a tomb of ignorance, keeping his eyes closed to the real world.
When he wakes up, and realized what the world truly is, his philosophies and beliefs are thrown into turmoil.
Now I know it seems like I am overanalyzing this, but the basic message is: We all realize the world isn't fair at some point, and this is describing Augustine relization.
I could explain how the rest of the song fits that theory....but I would probably get flamed for being to complex. w/e.
Just my thoughts.

The Saint Augustine theory does fit. I had always wondered if he had something to do with song but knew very little about him.
This song perfectly describes those moments in your life when you see "the big picture" and realize that so much of what you have focused on is completely insignificant. And you start to wonder what you should be doing with your life. God has so much more planned for us.
"Grant me continence, but not yet." snerk.
