Pushin' Forward Back Lyrics

Mother mother found me on her step
Gracious mother held me to her breast
Until the day I started pushin'
Too late to cry she turned away
I started pushin'
I saw no future in this lack
I started pushin' forward back

Baby brother clinging to her hair
Gracious mother pleading not another
Soul to bare he started pushin'
All my kings have fallen down
I started pushin'
Fallen heroes feed the ground
I started pushin' forward back

Falling down, now I know her
I know I'll never drown

I was pushin' forward back

Before he was Audioslave frontman, Chris Cornell was in Soundgarden and one of his friends, Andrew Wood, died of a heroin overdose. Cornell got together with Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard and formed Temple of the Dog, which grew into a Soundgarden/Pearl Jam supergroup. They only released the one self-titled album, but they're legendary; when you think grunge supergroups of the early 1990s, Temple of the Dog is usually the first that comes to mind. Since Cornell wrote the lyrics, he's got the intellectual rights to them; you'll also notice that Audioslave also does a few Soundgarden covers such as Black Hole Sun and Rage Against the Machine ones as well, like Sleep Now InTthe Fire because the other bands members are the ex-Rage outfit.

This was not a supergroup...they were nothing when they "formed" as you put it. This was never actually a band, they got together to do one tribute to a fallen friend, and that is all it was ever meant to be and all it ever has been.

i see this as the ultimate slacker song, its just about procrastinating and putting off life to chill out and do drugs, and the guy in the song, whether its chris cornell or andrew wood or whoever, is pushing everybody he loves away from him through this lifestyle. "pushing forward back" just means putting everything off til tomorrow, forgetting his goals and just letting go

Could it be about how Andrew Wood's family rejected him due to his heroine addiction? "Pushin forward back" could be the syringe?

I see what your trying to get at with the family rejection and Andrew Wood.

I've seen this one everywhere, even on an Audioslave demo. The hell? =/

a large portion of this album was dedicated to Andrew Wood after his death, and I do think that this song is no exception, but my opinion of the "pushin' forward back" explanation, is that it is not a syringe, but rather, he (Andrew?) is trying to push his way back into his mothers life, but she pushes him away. "I was pushin' forward back."

I'm thinking this song starts with him doing heroin because he "saw no future in this lack", that's him pushing away... then he wants back into his family's life, but they still reject him. Gracious mother pleading not another = not another person to take care of again, because of the baby brother already. All my kings have fallen down = losing. Any idea what "Fallen heroes feed the ground" means? Sorry for the broken english.

@DJgif Fallen heroes feed the ground = Fallen heroes are dying............I just heard this song on the Pearl Jam Radio station and wanted to look it up- Chris was sooo smart and soooo talented....and now he's one of our fallen heroes feeding the ground- he's rockin with Andrew now...

@joannecu5 I'd give almost anything to hope this was accurate

THIS SONG KICKS ASS!!!!!!!! This was in the movie BENNY & JOON!!!!!! This is the song that's playing on the radio when Sam (Johnny Depp) is cleaning Benny & Joon's house.

The Album Temple of the Dog was dedicated to Andrew Wood the frontman of Mother Love Bone (Note the Mother reference in the song and the Dog reference in the band album title.) This track deals with the heroin addiction that killed Andrew. Mother in the title is referencing the group Mother Love Bone and the group's dealing with Andrew's addiction. Heroin is known as Mother's milk to addicts so there's a double tie-in. (Note: the Red Hot Chili Pepper's album of the same name, Anthony Kiedis had been dealing with his addiction.)
