This song is not about growing up...This song is about selling out...which is something a lot of artists do...'Play me a groove one for my radio one for my love that came and went. So many stories hey man I'm sorry THIS IS JUST A SONG TO PAY THE RENT!' It's awesome...and shows his real love and passion for what he does!

It's about the fact that all ANY of us do once we "grow up" and enter the "real world" is "sell out"...and how painful that fact is.

I think this song is about how the world presents a lot of flashy things to us when we're young and inexperienced, and then we get all excited and have big dreams about getting involved in all that stuff. But then sometimes, it turns out to be not what we expected, and we feel let down and perhaps somewhat fragile by the experience, and need someone to turn to who truthfully supports us, rather than just the sycophants who were associated with the flashy stuff or big dreams. That's sort of how the song resonated with me anyway when I first heard it, and became attached to it.

Also, the part "Hey man I'm sorry Joe, this is just a song to pay the rent" always makes me think about the jobs I have quit because my heart wasn't really in them, and I was only there for the money--I always seem to end up with bosses named Jo/e! haha.
