(Step up, step up) step up
(Step up, step up) step up
(Step up, step up, step up)

Fall back
Take a look at me
And you'll see I'm for real
I feel what only I can feel
And if that don't appeal to you
Let me know
And I'll go
'Cause I flow
Better when my colors show
And that's the way it has to be
Honestly
'Cause creativity could never bloom
In my room
I'd throw it all away before I lie
So don't call me with a compromise
Hang up the phone
I've got a backbone stronger than yours

La, la, la, la, la (step up, step up)
La, la, la, la, la (step up, step up)
La, la, la, la, la, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

If you're trying to turn me into someone else
It's easy to see I'm not down with that
I'm not nobody's fool (I'm not nobody's fool)
If you're trying to turn me into something else
I've seen enough and I'm over that
I'm not nobody's fool (I'm not nobody's fool)
If you want to bring me down
Go ahead and try
Go ahead and try

You don't know
You think you know me like yourself
But I fear
That you're only telling me what I want to hear
But do you give a damn?
Understand
That I can't not be what I am
I'm not the milk and cheerios in your spoon
It's not a simple, "here we go," not so soon
I might have fallen for that when I was fourteen
And a little more green
But it's amazing what a couple of years can mean

La, la, la, la, la (step up, step up)
La, la, la, la, la (step up, step up)
La, la, la, la, la, yeah, yeah, yeah

If you're trying to turn me into someone else
It's easy to see I'm not down with that
I'm not nobody's fool (I'm not nobody's fool)
If you're trying to turn me into something else
I've seen enough and I'm over that
I'm not nobody's fool (I'm not nobody's fool)
If you want to bring me down
Go ahead and try
Go ahead and try

Go ahead and try
Try to look me in the eye
But you'll never see inside
Until you realize, realize

Things are trying to settle down
Just try to figure out
Exactly what I'm about
If it's with or without you
I don't need you doubting me

If you're trying to turn me into someone else
It's easy to see I'm not down with that
I'm not nobody's fool (I'm not nobody's fool)
If you're trying to turn me into something else
I've seen enough and I'm over that
I'm not nobody's fool (I'm not nobody's fool, I'm not nobody's fool)
If you want to bring me down
Go ahead and try, try

La, la, la, la, la, yeah, yeah
La, la, la, la, la, yeah, yeah
La, la, la, la, la, ah
La, la, la, la, la

Would you be laughing out loud? (la, la, la, la)
If I played to my own crowd (la, la, la, la)
Try (go ahead and try)

This song kicks ass. It's not a story, I agree, it's a song. But I think it's a message too. Avril isnt a fool. Shes just being herself, just doing her own thing. Shes one of the only popstars that dont dress slutty, sing gay music, or wear too much make up and I respect her for that. This song is saying... well, it does say...

If you're trying to turn me into someone else Its easy to see I'm not down with that I'm not nobody's fool If you're trying to turn me into something else I've seen enough and I'm over that I'm not nobody's fool And if you wanna bring me down Go ahead and try

Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.

No Surprises

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Head > Heels
Ed Sheeran
“Head > Heels” is a track that aims to capture what it feels like to experience romance that exceeds expectations. Ed Sheeran dedicates his album outro to a lover who has blessed him with a unique experience that he seeks to describe through the song’s nuanced lyrics.
