Pick Up The Change

Why he is asking her to help him to pick up the change? Because she is changing and he wants to change with her, so they will still have lots of things in common, like they used to. So when he says 'now we are just the same', it is more of a wishful thinkig than truth. Apparently they are drifting apart, her mind is wondering, and he hopes that kissing her on her cheek will make it fall back in line. For me this song is about a couple that struggles to stay together by changing together. Very romantic, but not simple (personal experience). Anyhow, beautiful song.

I definitely don't want to rain on anyone's parade considering the comments here expressing their affinity for this perceived love song, but I have a different view.

To me, it seems as if the subject of this song is seeing his relationship grow staler quicker than he would like. This girl, while physically attractive to him and even better than he thinks he deserves, has become predictable in his mind; perhaps he's referring to them becoming more and more similar in their negative personal aspects rather than their positive. Physical affection is still much desired, that much is apparent. But it seems as though it's shown that the two of them use it to distract themselves from the inevitable: they're both wondering if their lives would be better off without one another. When he says "Help me pick up the change", I'm imagining he's asking her to help them salvage the remains of the relationship rather than continue being together romantically and grow to dislike or even hate each other.

But hey, who knows. The first time I played this album in full was moments before my girlfriend and I drunkenly and unamicably (apparently that's not a word) broke up a few weeks back, so my mind's still a little biased.

this song is great, just makes me think of a couple that's just perfect for each other, that they grow to be the same.

i think it's about having been in love with someone for long enough to just know everything about them so much that you're like the same person. i put this song on a mix cd for my boyfriend today so it's kinda special to me.

I think he's saying that they've become extremely similar but that she is still better then him. He's asking her to help make up the difference.

The song is sweet, but if two people are so alike I think there are some pros and cons. "We used to have a lot of things in common, but you know now we're just the same." So do they really have anything in common if they're just the same? I know that sounds backwards, but really, like let's say if you love everybody just the same, what do you really value? Nothing, because you love no one more than anyone else. To value something sort of implies that you think something is worth more than something else. If you were in a relationship and they said "I love you," but valuing you no more than anyone else, what kind of worth would those words have? I think this song is a lot more tragic to me, but there are some who do appreciate the security that comes with having a partner just like oneself. I think I just lean towards having more of a balance, like an opposite. The two verses about how their hearts and minds wander away from each other but then come back with a kiss or song is cute, but kind of shows how the physical gestures outweigh the heartfelt or mindful ones.

Sometime the lyrics themselves have to be read in the context of the actual music. This whole track is a bit somber, and certainly not just a straightforward love song. These lyrics are sung with a bit of lamentation as well. The line: "but you know now we're just the same" expresses a wish to go back to a time where they were different people, still exploring each other and yet to discover all their "common" elements. I think it's a song about a relationship that has grown stale, and they keep trying to inject energy into it by "picking up the change".
