to me this is about someone being left behind by someone he thought he knew.

"I don't even think you understand I thought i held you by the hand,"

she's acting cold and distant and is oblivious to why he would feel so hurt, and a big part of why he is so hurt by her leaving him is the fact that he believed she was in his life for good, that they were going to be together for a long time...they probably were very close, and she gave no hints to the fact she was going to disappear. afterwards, she can't even open her eyes enough to see her actions have destroyed him.

I couldn't agree more with you delial. It could reference Jay Farrar but I like to think of him singing to a woman that simply disappointed him by leaving. We've all had those days when we're so damn diappointed with people we let into our lives. The music and lyrics convey that diappointment extraordinarily well!
