To Be Over Lyrics

We go sailing down the calming streams,
Drifting endlessly by the bridge.
To be over, we will see, to be over.

Do not suffer through the game of chance that plays;
Always doors to lock away your dreams.
Think it over, time will heal your fear, think it over.
Balance the thoughts that release within you.

Childlike soul dreamer.
One journey, one to seek and see in every light
Do open true pathways away.

Carrying closer,
Go gently, holding doors will open every way
You wander true pathways away.

After all your soul will still surrender.
After all don't doubt your part,
Be ready to be loved.

It's a shame more people haven't commented on this truly beautiful song. To me, the lyrics are saying what's really possible if you just follow your dreams and that by the end you will know that you were right in doing so.

This song is so beautiful. I don't think the lyrics above contain the background vocals at the end during the fade-out. Does anyone know what is being chanted?

@Station I realize you posted your comment almost 6 years ago, but I hope you can somehow receive my reply. I have always loved the ending choral, which is sung to the melody that begins "To Be Over", however I have never seen these lyrics in any version of the song and would love to know what they are. If you by chance read this, did you ever get the answer?

@ClassicalRasta I did see your comment! And I replied but I accidentally did it on the song instead of in this thread.

This "world" is an illusion, very far from the One source of everything. But we are not separate, we are an extension of that source. Try to understand this and not be troubled by the changes around you here. In the end everything returns to the source, and perfection/peace/love/unity, etc is realized.

The Sun is a metaphor for the source.

Maybe i'm oversimplifying it but I believe it is about the choices in life and the next life, or the afterlife. Follow your dreams and when all your wandering is done, your life will "be over" and your soul will begin a new journey ~~ and you will love and be loved.

My Interpretation

@cyberiankhatru I believe you've got it. I remember reading an interview with Jon Anderson shortly after Relayer was released. In it he referred to this song as having a "end of life" theme, and that one's spirit (soul) will then experience new life and new adventures. I like your theory of "choices" as well. Perhaps if we choose well and wisely in this life, we could received greater options in the next...Peace.

I think it's a comforting song about how people easily get caught up in some sort of emotional purgatory after a recent break up/seperation with someone you've loved deeply. I always feel very emotional when listening to it at least..

The underlying context seems to be that you have to enjoy and seek the countless possibilities life has to offer and be ready to be loved again. Balance the thoughts and chase your dreams and leave the past behind.

I think this is a Steve-song, and he really outdid himself on it. Love the harmonies, the atmosphere, the increadible guitar work. Relayer is way overlooked.

The last verse really surprised me because it seems like surrendering your heart to Jesus, no turning back, be ready to be loved by God.

Or at least that's what I saw there considering I'm Christian. Probably not the original intent, but whatever, I like it.

That is way more profound than other yes songs that I have looked into.

Long time Yes fan, but recently re-visiting the spirituality side that Jon brought to (especially) To Be Over and Awaken.
To Be Over Firstly, are we not all "Childlike Soul Dreamers"... learning to understand our soul, how we dream (meditate and study) what it is, how we relate to everything else, as well as the source/sun. To me the most powerful lyrics are the final few: "After all, your soul will still surrender".... during our lives, but surely by its end, our soul must/will surrender to the source.... we have no choice! "After all, don't doubt your part be ready to be loved".... whether you are enlightened during this physical life, or will be at its end... do not doubt.... you will be loved.... be ready! How freaking beautiful Jon!

I've always saw it as literally and symbolically. Water is Life & Rivers have always been a metaphor for life's journey . And as we drift down the stream towards the end before reaching our final mutual destination we each learn to navigate our own best path towards our common destination. "Balance the Notes that release within you" meaning discover your passion, get on with it to the your highest level before you are "over" = (dead). YES lyrics are never as complicated as people make them out to be!

I simply thinks it's a beautiful poetic metaphor about life forever drifting towards the inevitable death and along the journey we loose the fear and relish in achieving the best in ourselves so when the time comes we are ready because it will come no matter what for we are all parts of the grand cosmic interwoven process.

I have to say of all the Yes albums, Relayer definitely seems to me to have the most uniformly symphonic format...all the songs seem to sort of flow into the next, with no jarring "Oh, this is a new song" moments. The whole work is very fluid and is a truly beautiful and unique piece of music the likes of which would (sadly) never be seen today...

This song, specifically, though, I think has a message that says to shed your inhibitions and go for your dreams. Dreams are portrayed by this song to have a more real meaning than anything else and they can lead you to real meanings and happiness.

I agree with you, this is kind of a great music that few could come up with in the modern days. Let's just hope that their newest album, which will be released this year, could bring us back to their glorious days, haha.

What gets me more interested is that this song is very, very smooth, soul-enchanting, even smoother than the "Soon" movement on The Gates of Delirium, very excellent!
