Sound Chaser

It is my personal belief that the band is trying to convey the power of music to assuage the emotions of the world, and its purpose as a driving and uniting cultural force.

From the beginning of our earthly lives we are exposed to noise, music has the power to transcend generations, and connect people.

Yes is and will always be one of my favorite bands. Coming from a 16 year old kid who's fed up with this resurgence in jam band culture- it's good to know that bands are continuing to do bolder and wilder things (Mars Volta, Iwrestledabearonce, Opeth). Bands will always have great lyrics, but alot of them have horrible musicianship. The simple answer to that problem? Yes!

I find it hard to comment on the lyrics to this song, not because they're as nebulous as ever, but simply because they introduce and then pale before some of the most incredibly blistering music of Yes' halcyon days of the mid 70s.

All you mixers and samplers out there (who claim to be able to 're-invent' music), take the best bits from the best instrumental breaks from the best bands anywhere in the world, of any time, and you'll not even come close to the originality, diversity and sheer exhuberance of Sound chaser, or, for that matter, the 'battle' sequence in Gates of Delerium.

As Steve Howe once said in a VH1 interview, 'Hurrah for the seventies'. Hear hear.

Yeah, I definitely agree with you Eatcarpet. It's hard to find a better jack-in-the-box ending. A guy who later wrote a book on Yes saw them opening a gig with this in the US Midwest in '74, before the album was out, and "my first reaction (as soon as the song started) was that the band had gone crazy!"

Incredible guitar, too. The sound in the middle section is very special, somehow Steve filtered off most of the main tone and caught merely the delay and overtones.

I can't say I enjoy the cha chas particularly, but I can live with them.

I just have to say that this is probably one of if not my most favorite Yes songs. The way the main theme is stretched and transposed and taken slow and ridiculously fast...and the last two minutes are absolutely mind-blowing. Particularly the bassline at the end under the keyboard solo after the cha-cha-chas. Fantastic.

To me this song really brings out Yes's jazz influences. Whether they are specific or not, you can't deny that this song is kind of jazzy. Also, whoever is on keyboards through this album, (they have so many, i can't keep track) is amazing. Love it. Also what I get from these lyrics is that they just enjoy creating their music.
