Letters and Packages Lyrics
maybe everything is tragic and temporary. remember esme at age thirteen. already blase and broken hearted, so elegant, so considerate. if only she were older.
as a result of my history i'm afraid i'll let you down. if only we were older.

i remember that Slainger story...i am proud to say that i have had the pleasure of meeting Mike Kinsella...and it was wonderful...
thank you so much for posting these, ive been looking all over. :)
this band was amazing.......too bad they broke up.......this cd never ever leaves my player. every song is a masterpiece
i love this song so much
american football is the classic example of something TRUE. something that doesn't need popolarity, fame, success to be good. Those guys did, in my opinion, one of the BEST 1999 records some years ago, without taking much credit off it, without doing any video, big live appearences and stuff. just SINCERE music from their hearths, nothing more, nothing less. When i read at comments by fans regarding any band, like "this song is amazing" or "they're the best", i just realize that it's only cuz they're fans, even if the songs suck. But regarding american football, how can you be or not to be a fan of music that by its nature is the essence of the perfection?
Nothing beats listening to this song while summer driving and having a smoke. So.Fucking.Beautiful.
Esme? Someone fix that.
ahem; what's to fix? I think this song is probably about the short story 'For Esme- With Love and Squalor' which is in Nine Stories by J.D. Salinger. Esme was a young girl that the main character, an american soldier, met in a tearoom after seeing her perform in a choir. They talked over tea and she told him about her fathers death and such. When she left she got his contact information &at the end of the story he was looking through an assortment of unopened 'letters and packages' and found something that she sent him. A wonderful story.
already blase.. i was wondering what that word was.. thanks :)
What I love about AF is that their lyrics aren't rhyme for rhyme, line by line. The lyrics melt into the song itself, so you never really pay attention to the lyrics when you first hear the song. And then, you look them up online and you say to yourself "whoa." When ou suddenly think the song can't get any better, it actually does.
PS thank you very much aeronautical for that fact
