The Dirty Glass Lyrics

Murphy, Murphy darling dear
I long for you now night and day
Your pain was my pleasure, your sorrow my joy
I fear now I've lost you to health and good cheer

Darcy when I met you I was 5 years too young
A boy beyond his age or so I'd tell someone
Anyone who'd listen and a few who couldn't care
Still I welcomed you with open arms, my love I did share

Darcy, Darcy darlin' dear
You me left dying, crying there
In whiskey, gin, and pints of beer
I fell for you my darling dear

You shut me off then you showed me the door
But you always came crawlin' back beggin' me for more
I showed you kindness, a stool and a tab
Then you poured me my pain in a dirty glass
Yeah you left him bloody, battered, penniless, and poor
You know I often stopped to wonder how he made through my door
With my brothers new non-duplicate registry I.D.
Well, you bit off more than you could chew the first day you met me

Darcy Darcy darlin' dear
You left me dying, crying there
In whiskey, gin, and pints of beer
I fell for you my darling dear

You weren't the first to court me, mister, you won't be the last
Oh I'm sure I wasn't honey, I know all about your past
Listen to the big shot with his pager on call
You spent most of those nights in my bathroom stall
Yeah, you got him high but you left him low
Mind your own business, boy, how was I to know
That he was just a fiend and a no-good cheat
Well that's all in the past, bitch, 'cause now I got it beat

Darcy Darcy darlin' dear
You left me dying, crying there
In whiskey, gin, and pints of beer
I fell for you my darling dear

Darcy Darcy darlin' dear
You left me dying, crying there
In whiskey, gin, and pints of beer
I fell for you my darling dear

Darcy Darcy darlin' dear
You left me dying, crying there
In whiskey, gin, and pints of beer
I fell for you my darling dear

Darcy Darcy darlin' dear
You left me dying, crying there
In whiskey, gin, and pints of beer
I fell for you my darling dear

My dear, my dear
Darcy Darcy darlin' dear

I like to look at this song as a metaphor to Murphy’s “relationship” with the bar scene.

The bar, Darcy, is being referred to as a luring and manipulative love from the past.

Bars profit off patrons drinking away their sorrows. "Your pain was my pleasure, your sorrow my joy"

Murphy gets into the bar scene too young “when I met you I was five years too young”

Resulting in a dependence on alcohol “fell for you my darling dear. You shut me off and you showed me the door But you always came crawling back begging me for more”

The bar/Darcy exploits his dependency for profit I showed you kindness, a stool, and a TAB

And doesn’t give a shit. Then you poured me MY PAIN in a DIRTY GLASS”

Murphy’s over indulgence with booze progresses into drugs. ”You bit off more than you could chew the first day you met me.” “Pager on call…You spent most of those nights in my bathroom stall”

The bar/Darcy clears their conscience by denying responsibility. “How was I to know? That he was just a fiend and a no-good cheat.”

Murphy comes to his senses after realizing Darcy’s intent “You weren't the first to court me mister you won't be the last Oh, I'm sure I wasn't honey, I know all about your past!”

And recovers. “It’s all in the past bitch 'cause now I've got it beat.”

The song begins with Darcy’s regret of losing his business and wants him back. “Murphy, Murphy, darling dear I long for you now night and day.…I feel now I've lost you to health and good cheer”

The end is Murphy mocking Darcy’s insincerity. "My dear, my dear Darcy, Darcy my darling dear.”

this is almost exactly how I interpreted this.. except for the alcoholic progressing into drugs? "Murphys over indulgence with booze progresses into drugs. 'You bit off more than you could chew the first day you met me. Pager on call. You spent most of those nights in my bathroom stall"

to me that is just referring to the fact that he was in too deep, over his head..and spent most of the time throwing up in the bathroom lol.

good take on this though. I'm positive that's what DKM true meaning is

This answer is awesome, its a metaphor for drinking too early and getting hooked. Nice one

This song is awesome, it is one of my favorite DKM songs, and I love the chemistry between them and Kay. The chorus is so catchy, and everyone does a great job singing throughout the whole song.

Who's this "Kay" you '02 posters speak of? Meh... 3 years too late. I feel foolish... heehee.

The woman's name is Stephanie Dougherty; it says so in the Blackout album's insert.

Yeah, great song.

@MisterChainsaw

The original recording featured Kay Hanley, another beloved Boston native. She performed it with them a zillion times in the 90s, and a bunch of times since. Stephanie Dougherty atood in for Kay Hankey on the album release because Kay was unavailable at the time.

this is my favorite song right now...bold is Kay, regular is DKM, italics is the chorus...

Hell yea...what better than having The lead singer in Letters To Cleo and The awesome Dropkick Murphys 2gether singing a song? Its great!!!

its a good song but it is way to "fairy tale of new york" its almost the same song actually, its good, but it was done by the mighty macgowan first

The only real similarity between this song and Fairytale is they are both duets featuring a female vocalist.

and the same basic story...

they fall in love and end up hating each other...

Cover art for The Dirty Glass lyrics by Dropkick Murphys

I never saw this as a simple story about the guy (Murphy) falling for the barmaid (Darcy). The barmaid symbolizes alcohol. Murphy starts drinking at a young age and he develops a problem with it. Drinking gets the best of him for a long time but he finally gets a grip on it and gets his problem under control.
