I'm Waiting For The Day Lyrics
I came along when he broke your heart
That's when you needed someone
To help forget about him
I gave you love with a brand new start
That's what you needed the most
To set your broken heart free
I know you cried, and you felt blue
But when I could I gave strength to you
I'm waiting for the day when you can love again
I kissed your lips
And when your face looked sad
It made me think about him
And that you still loved him so
But you know that pretty soon
I made you feel glad
That you belonged to me
And love began to show
He hurt you then, but that's all gone
I guess I'm saying you're the only one
I'm waiting for the day when you can love again
He hurt you then, but that's all done
I guess I'm saying you're the only one
I'm waiting for the day when you can love again
You didn't think that I could sit around and let him work
You didn't think that I could sit around and let (watch) him take you
You didn't think that I could sit around and let him go
You didn't think that I could sit back and let you go
You didn't think . . .
That's when you needed someone
To help forget about him
That's what you needed the most
To set your broken heart free
But when I could I gave strength to you
I'm waiting for the day when you can love again
And when your face looked sad
It made me think about him

He doesn't shoot him. Jesus, this is Pet Sounds we're talking about here.
I always interpreted this song thusly: The first part is fairly obvious, chick got hurt and he's trying to pick up the pieces and waiting for the day. It's all pretty and romantic and he's a very nice boy for being so patient. But at the same time, it'd be awfully frustrating having this girl moping about the last guy she was with.
So in the second part, the first guy has come and taken back the girl, and our narrator hasn't put up much of a fight, because girlie's still in love with the first dude and if she hasn't realised that the second one is the far better guy by now then she's not worth it. I take it it's a case of a girl choosing the bad boy over the nice guy, but the narrator's damned if he's gonna sacrifice his dignity trying to keep her, and she didn't think that he'd give up so easily because he is in love with her, but he's gotta keep his self-respect.
I think there is something sinister in the end. Why does she think he would sit around and watch her go? She obviously tried to go back to the old boyfriend. Something happened, and he stopped it. I don't know if he killed anyone, but he did something.

This song should have alot more comments.. definitely in the top 3 on Pet Sounds.. love the end where they come back in with the"You didn't think that I could....", in my opinion you can hear the angst and the anger in his voice like he really means what he's singing.. anyways Pet Sounds is right up there in my top 10 albums of all times.. it's ironic to me that it just finally became platinum in the U.S. in the 21st century.
A song that once again really resignates the feelings of many people in their teenage years. In one way, it's a great song about someone who came at the right time to lend a shoulder. On the other hand, it could also be perceived as someone taking advantage of the other. I believe, considering the rest of the Pet Sounds album, that it was the former. The end of this song is just amazing. It picks up quickly and batters out great lines. The last one which says "you didn't think that I could sit back and let you go" almost means that now he has her, and will not let her go even if the other guy comes back. Another perfect song from the Pet Sounds album.
This entire album is genius. Brian Wilson is a god.
Maybe there's a switch of speaker in the last section, the tone is so different. It's the old boyfriend she still loves reclaiming her. He had lost interest in the relationship, but now is re-invigorated by the spirit of competition with his usurper. The relationship between the two men is subtly homoerotic: "I kissed your lips... It made me think about him"; "You didn't think that I could sit around and let him go."
this is probably my favorite bb song of all time.
i think it's much darker than those who've posted thus far. i think dude actually kills his lover's ex. if you listen closely to the end, the band uses the drum to mimic the sound of a gun shot. afterwards, he says, "you didn't think....that i could sit around and let you go..." In a desperate attempt to keep his lover from going back to her ex, he shoots him.
