Enter From The East Lyrics
I went out a'wandering
Beneathe an unknown dky
The heavens all shook violently
He caught my eyes
Strange foot fell
It struck me to the core
My heart became a single flame
It wanted nothing more
Stranger, enter from the east
Stranger, step inside this place
Oh, I'm lonely
All lonely
The clock became a bullet hole
Cruel and unking
It hurt me with it's second hand
Alone another night
Stranger, enter from the east
Stranger, step inside this place
Blue, is that you (???)
Knocking on my door this time
Blue, only true for someone else
There's no room inside this heart of mine
My heart has four empty rooms
Three wait for lightning
And one waits for you
I must have you all to myself
Feel the full weight of your skin
I'll hollow out my insides
To place you in
Stranger, enter from the east
Stranger, step inside this place
Oh, I'm lonely
All lonely
Ohhhh.....
Beneathe an unknown dky
The heavens all shook violently
He caught my eyes
It struck me to the core
My heart became a single flame
It wanted nothing more
Stranger, step inside this place
All lonely
Cruel and unking
It hurt me with it's second hand
Alone another night
Stranger, step inside this place
Knocking on my door this time
Blue, only true for someone else
There's no room inside this heart of mine
My heart has four empty rooms
Three wait for lightning
And one waits for you
Feel the full weight of your skin
I'll hollow out my insides
To place you in
Stranger, step inside this place
All lonely

lol a foot fell hah, anyways, this a beutiful song, i love it!
Beautiful song.
This song if very pretty. I think the meaning is very blunt but abstract at the same time. I think the she is waiting for a perfect love to find her. She is opening herself up for any one who is willing (i.e "Stranger enter from the East") Also I think that she is a bit lonely and is tired of waiting. (i.e My heart has 4 empty rooms, 3 wait for lightning and 1 waits for you.) This song is very sweet. I love Jewel!! Tera
This song is very beuatiful. Its one of Jewel's best in an era when she was writing deep and emotionally charged, insightful songs.
Its about lonliness and the dreams of love but it has the magical/mythical qualities of her epic songs Jupiter and Barcelona. It fits well with the rest of the Spirit album.
I particularly like the verse:
The clock became a bullet hole Cruel and unkind It hurt me with it's second hand Alone another night
This is just so descriptive. You can feel her lonliness and the pain as the clock is ticking her life away.
I used to think this song was about a girl wanting to find the right guy, but after some recent changes in my life, I listened again and now I see it in a whole new way. The song comes from the Album "Spirit" which makes perfect sense once you've read my thoughts on the meaning behind this one.
From the top< Wondering beneath and unknown sky: she is lost.
The heavens all shoot violently: A storm, but she saw the calm ahead.
Strange fruit fell: something like a feeling of need, and she knew what is was, now is the time to go get it.
The "Stranger" is God. She is seeking God in her life, for he has been lost to her for so long, but know it was time to reclaim her relationship with him.
The clock became a bullet hole: Time became cruel to her, life was hard and getting worse.
She was hurt by someone yet again and she needed to find salvation in another form. She is tired of being alone, but with God she will never again be alone.
Blue, don't bother knocking on my door again: Sadness go away, I wont let you take over my life, Now that I have found my salvation you can no longer haunt me.
Feel the full weight of your skin, hallow out my insides to let you in: I will let go of all my past transgressions so that my relationship with you "God" will be full.
Then Finally, "Own Me", for no man or woman can own anyone else. Only God himself can own you... Your soul belongs to no one but Christ.
I know that Jewel is a Christian women and I recently found my own salvation with Christ and I after hearing this song again, I see, it, and a few others of her songs including Barcelona, as Christian based songs.
Again, this is just my own opinion, but I encourage you to listen again. Maybe you will see it to.
Happy listening.
The beauty of this song lies in the raw honesty of the words. It is very evocative the way she describes sorrowful craving, and this is also captured by the raspier whispered tone she uses to sing this line "I must have you all to myself, Feel the full weight of your skin, I'll hollow out my insides, To place you in." This is one of those songs that resonates with me on a deeper level and I love the unashamed desire to merge with and be possessed by another and the rich darkness of the words. To me it is about a passionate love that has left a mark forever; the kind that one lives and breathes for to have again. Weather it is a lost love craved for once again, the moments in between in the absence of intimacy, or a glimpse of a hijacking type of love through inspiration, she describes in simple but beautiful language the kind of love that remains a constant hollow pain until it is satiated, "The clock became a bullet hole, Cruel and unkind, It hurt me with its second hand, Alone another night." Even with the overarching sad tone,I think this is also a very hopeful song; at one point she tells 'blue' to take a hike, "Blue, go be true for someone else There's no room inside this heart of mine My heart has four empty rooms Three wait for lightning And one waits for you."
The song is about someone she met while she was on tour (on the East Coast) and how she was sad to be leaving ("The clock became a bullet hole, Cruel and unkind, It hurt me with its second hand"). "Hollow out my insides to place you in" sounds like she was in a lascivious mood (like one of her early, unreleased songs "Stick your finger in my buttercup"... she was pretty open about her sexuality). Interestingly enough, she recycled a line from "Absence of Fear" which appears on the Spirit album -- "Inside my heart, there's an empty room, it's waiting for lightning, it's waiting for you." Lightning being a reference to how rare a circumstance it is for lightning to strike... it's just as farfetched to expect him, etc.
