This song is amazing, it's so damn dark and somber, but kinda uplifting at the same time. I love the tone of his voice in the verses, he sounds like he's not even trying to sing or like he doesn't care, Robert Smith had that same style in some of the earlier The Cure songs.
The lyrics to this are great too, it kinda sounds like he's singing about a girl who might have treated him bad but he's so in love with her that he almost enjoys the pain she causes. But I dunno, a lot of the lines in the verses are just plain weird.
i love this line: <i>looking at me enjoying something</i> suggesting this woman is helping him get over his numbness of everything...but then the following line comes: <i>that feels like feels like pain</i> and gives that first line a whole new meaning...
reminds me of someone special i know hes always happiest when it rains and i can feel the his rush of emotion as the first downpour hits
love it. this song doesn't stop being good.

For many people they hate boredom and any attention is better than none at all. If a relationship is stagnant (no ups and no downs....kind of like the heartbeat line on the hospital machines) it's not necessarily healthy. I think the last two people before me got the meaning right. This song kinda reminds me of that song on the tire commercial that goes, "Raindrops keep falling on my head, but that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turning red."
LOL...I'm sorry, but the fact that you recall that tune from a 'tire commercial" makes me laugh. It was a far more meaningful song back when it was on the airwaves, and fortunately I got to hear it in its intended state.

"I Would Break My Back For You" might be the most heartachingly beautiful line ever sung. And Jim's delivery is just amazing
this is one of jamc's most brilliant songs, and one of my favorites of all time. i believe jim is singing about a relationship in which a girl is obviously toxic, yet he is just so madly devoted to her he accepts all of the pain and torment she causes, and has even come to relish it. still, as destructive as she is, her words seem to be able to rescue him when he's down, even if it's only momentary--hence, "happy when it rains."
