It Never Rains In California Lyrics

Got on board a westbound seven forty-seven
Didn't think before deciding what to do
Ooh, that talk of opportunities, TV breaks and movies
Rang true, sure rang true ...

Seems it never rains in southern California
Seems I've often heard that kind of talk before
It never rains in California, but girl, don't they warn ya?
It pours, man, it pours

I'm out of work, I'm out of my head
Out of self respect, I'm out of bread
I'm underloved, I'm underfed, I wanna go home
It never rains in California, but girl, don't they warn ya?
It pours, man, it pours

Will you tell the folks back home I nearly made it?
Had offers but didn't know which one to take
Please don't tell 'em how you found me
Don't tell 'em how you found me
Gimme a break, give me a break

Seems it never rains in southern California
Seems I've often heard that kind of talk before
It never rains in California, but girl, don't they warn ya?
It pours, man, it pours

Cover art for It Never Rains In California lyrics by Mamas & the Papas, The

California was a bright gleaming destination in 1973 when this song came out, and even then it was a disappointment to Albert Hammond, who learned that stardom does not come easy and many failures lie by the wayside. These days California is not a destination to anyone but illegal aliens and it is overrun with homelessness and crime and killer taxes.

@RealityMan99

Cali always reminds me of the the wilds fire pandemic. Can you just imagine what thats like. God bless those people who survived. Some don't.

Seems it never rains in southern California Seems I've often heard that kind of talk before It never rains in California, but girl, don't they warn ya? It pours, man, it pours

while the end of the lyric appears to say that they warn you it pours in california, i actually think that it seems that it never rains in california and the tv breaks and movies makes it seem so glamourous but once she actually gets there, it's pouring. as in you can't escape life in the glitz and glam because even in southern california, in the land of opportunity or the land of fame, it pours - man it pours

he wants a break - 'give me a break, give me a break' as in he went to california to get rich or famous and now it's pouring so now he needs a break from all of the stuff in his life

doubt that's what it really means, but i still like this song

I hadn't heard this song in years...

I think it's a suicide note.

A guy heads for Cali with visions of showbiz fame dancing in his head, and when he gets there, he finds that it's hard to break into the business, and sunny SoCal ain't so sunny after all- "I'm out of work, I'm out of my head/I'm out of self-respect, I'm out of bread", etc.

But he doesn't want the folks back home to know that he ended up flat busted, or that he took his own life- "Don't tell 'em how you found me."

This song is not by the Mamas and the Papas. It is by a man named Albert Hammond and was released in 1972, long after the Mamas and the Papas had broken up (at least for the first time). They did have a brief reunion in 1971 that lasted into 1972, so it is conceivable that they performed this song somewhere during their reunion, but I can find no indication of that. It is not on any of their records.

I don't think the Mamas & The Papas sang this, tho it sure is their type of thing.

I think it means that the people in CA live in denial, they swear it never rains, it's always sunny and lovely; but the truth is, it DOES rain. The rain however is a metaphor: people are just as miserable in CA as anywhere else, but they hide it better.

Having lived in CA for 27 years now, and a native New Yorker, I see the song this way because that is the way I see Californians.
