Even in His Youth Lyrics

Even in his youth he was nothing
Kept his body clean going nowhere
Daddy was ashamed he was nothing
Smears the family name he was something

Leave the check before you are through
I've got nothing left to prove
If I die before I wake
Hope I don't come back again

I think the song is about not caring if you wake up in the morning because you feel as if no one else does eithier because they're so ashamed of you.

This song is about Kurt's out look on himself from his Father's prospective. Just so you know the lyrics above are wrong. Kurt didn't really like his father. He hated him for "unmercifully beating him as a child and leaving him, getting a new family and not wanting to include him in his new life.." If you don't believe me go check out the documentary "About a Son" where Kurt talks about it in his own words. Pretty much I interpret the song as Kurt talking about himself from his dad's prospective saying Kurt disgraced his family and never has and never will amount to anything.

There are two different versions of this song, with slightly different lyrics. (Not uncommon for Nirvana)

This is what I get from the version I have:

Even in his youth (3x) He was nothing Kept his body clean (3x) Going nowhere Daddy was ashamed (3x) Even in his youth (3x) He was nothing

Read this form before you're through I've got nothing left to prove If I die before I wake Hope I don't come back a slave

Yeah yeah

Read this form before you're through I've got nothing left for you If I die before I wake Hope I don't come back again

Even in his youth (3x) Yeah yeah (etc)

This is the version where the audio cut out on the vocals on the third time he sings, "Disgrace the family name," as if he leaned away from the mic or something like that.

I prerfer this version. The other version I've heard a lot, the words change a lot more. "I've got nothing left to do // left to lose // left to prove" and "Hope I don't come back again // a slave // the same." (IIRC) But I think the music is a lot better in the version I put the lyrics up for.

Even in his youth (3x) He was nothing Kept his body clean (3x) Going nowhere Daddy was ashamed (3x) He was nothing Disgrace the family name (3x*) Going nowhere

Read this form before you're through I've got nothing left to prove If I die before I wake Hope I don't come back a slave

@pentalarc my mans got it. the best version of this song is on the nevermind anniversary. "IVE GOT NOTHING LEFT TO PROVE!" is my favorite kurt lyric. He downplayed his ambition his entire life, telling everyone who'd listen he didn't want fame, and success but thats total bullshit. Montage of heck has a great scene when he's practicing in he shitty apartment relentlessly. when i hear this song i picture him in those days; being shuffled back and forth between parents, sleeping in cars, in that dump with tracy-god only knows how many times she probably told him to get a job, have...

It looks like this is about his childhood. When his parents divorced when he was 9, it was very hard for him. His family ment a lot to him, and when his father was gone, most probably thoght it was his fault. "Daddy was ashamed he was nothing Smears the family name he was something" I think this started his whole depression thing. Many of his songs are about that! For example "serve the servants" (i tried so hard to have a father but nstead i had a dad.)

just a different view from this being about his childhood, maybee its about how people(like jesus) were borin only to die for others (maybee a friend of his died young)

No it's not, it's about a kid that's parents are ashamed of him.

yeah, maybe he felt his parents were ashamed of him, because he dropped out of school, and shit like that. She always felt he was the reason his parents divorced, maybe because he thought at that age that they were ashamed of him....

hey all of these are opinions, u can't just say "no,it's not!"
