Meet On The Ledge Lyrics
We used to say
There'd come the day.
We'd all be making songs,
Or finding better words,
These ideas never lasted long
The way is up,
Along the road.
The air is growing thin.
Too many friends who tried,
Blown off this mountain
With the wind.
Meet on the ledge,
We're gonna meet on the ledge.
When the time is up
I'm gonna see all my friends.
Meet on the ledge,
We're gonna meet on the ledge.
If you really mean it
It all comes 'round again.
And now I see,
I'm all alone.
But that's the only way to be.
You'll have your chance again
Then you can do the work
For me.
Meet on the ledge,
We're gonna meet on the ledge.
When my time is up
I'm gonna see all my friends.
Meet on the ledge,
We're gonna meet on the ledge.
If you really mean it
It all comes 'round again.
( REFRAIN 2 TIMES TO END)
There'd come the day.
We'd all be making songs,
Or finding better words,
These ideas never lasted long
Along the road.
The air is growing thin.
Too many friends who tried,
Blown off this mountain
With the wind.
We're gonna meet on the ledge.
When the time is up
I'm gonna see all my friends.
Meet on the ledge,
We're gonna meet on the ledge.
If you really mean it
It all comes 'round again.
I'm all alone.
But that's the only way to be.
You'll have your chance again
Then you can do the work
For me.
We're gonna meet on the ledge.
When my time is up
I'm gonna see all my friends.
Meet on the ledge,
We're gonna meet on the ledge.
If you really mean it
It all comes 'round again.

Isn't this about death?
"The Ledge" was a tree branch: one where Richard Thompson and his friends always met as small children. He wrote the song at age 17. Over the years? The phrase—and the song—acquired a weight the writer never knew he intended.
After performing the song at his mother's funeral, as stipulated in her will? Richard conceded he'd been too shy. Declaring love for his bandmates, in a song they'd publicly sing again and again? To be so direct: no, that wouldn't do.
Sometimes people need to have time to themselves after a good row with a friend(s). Things usually work out after a meeting on the ledge.
It's about how friendships last forever
