Who knows where the time goes Lyrics
But how can they know it's time for them to go?
Before the winter fire, I will still be dreaming
I have no thought of time
Who knows where the time goes?
Ah, but then you know it's time for them to go
But I will still be here, I have no thought of leaving
I do not count the time
Who knows where the time goes?
I know it will be so until it's time to go
So come the storms of winter and then the birds in spring again
I have no fear of time
And who knows where the time goes?

An absolute gem, this one; so winsome, so pleasing

Wonderful song. It seems to be about accepting that things are the way they are and, having accepted reality, one may relax.
"Across the evening sky, all the birds are leaving But how can they know it's time for them to go? Before the winter fire, I will still be dreaming I have no thought of time"
While laying and listening to the initial line, being an environmental scientist, I immediately started trying to think of actual physiological reasons a bird may realize the change of seasons. That, however, is completely missing the point. I let that go and was overcome with peace. Just letting the thought of life constantly unfolding flow through my mind. It needs no explanation.
So, the answer to "Who knows where the time goes?" is "Who cares?"

Just one of the most poignant and beautiful songs anywhere. Sandy Denny's finest moment and Fairport's as well.
The end of summer and the passing of time all wrapped up into one song.

One of my favorite songs of all time (no pun intended).
