Not Our Property Lyrics
Pain is pain.
We designate our higher rank,
Then subjugate those of a “lesser” state.
We construct the definitions
To reinforce our dominant positions
And now that we’ve established us and them,
We feel a peace of mind. Similarities?
Coincidence, dismissed; all doubts are set aside.
But don’t look in the mirror – you may not like what you find ‘cause when the doubts return you’ll see that being human doesn’t mean we have the right to do whatever the fuck we please.
Is it lack of compassion, or a love of control?
Dare I speculate? Do I want to know?
I renounce that mindset;
I offer my respect
To the non-human animals I share this earth with.
Their existence is not defined by our status in comparison.
They’re so much more than biological instruments.
Pain is pain across the board.
Your rationalizations hold no more.
Superior to what!?
So as long as you maintain your present course,
That train of thought let me tell you that…
I’ll live my life resisting as long
As you keep riding that train of thought.
Then subjugate those of a “lesser” state.
We construct the definitions
To reinforce our dominant positions
And now that we’ve established us and them,
We feel a peace of mind. Similarities?
Coincidence, dismissed; all doubts are set aside.
Dare I speculate? Do I want to know?
I renounce that mindset;
I offer my respect
To the non-human animals I share this earth with.
They’re so much more than biological instruments.
Your rationalizations hold no more.
Superior to what!?
So as long as you maintain your present course,
That train of thought let me tell you that…
I’ll live my life resisting as long
As you keep riding that train of thought.

I believe this song deals with present caste systems in societies. We make caste systems out of our insecurities and then reinforce them so that they become the norm.
"But don't look in... the fuck we please" - This piece talks about Manifest Destiny and how many imperial nations (such as the US) believe they have a God-given right to act as the world police.
"Pain is pain across the board." - This statement holds true in the purest sense. Animals and humans are capable of experiencing pain and it's all the same negative feeling. Just because it may be you or someone halfway around the world doesn't mean it holds any less value.
Marc presents irony, I think, when he says "To the non-human animals I share this earth with" because in the entire song he's talking about the equality of humanity but he's disgusted at the irrational, animal-like people in this world.
In short, this song is about the equality of all humanity and that one person's pain doesn't override another's. The ideals that support that need to be resisted and refuted because they continue on the cycle of genocidal tendencies.
