Happy Endings Lyrics
This town makes my mind slow down
I've got lines on my face like highways now
I'm chasing breezes kicking boulders
And all of the while just getting older
I leave pieces of paper
Pieces of myself along the way
Out the window
Out the window
I tell myself that
I'll come back for them before I go
Then I won't sing this song tomorrow
Reason calls I'm never listening
There's always something more distracting
And you take everything so seriously
Then you leave and burn up on re-entry
The happy endings
All these little victories
Gather up and hung on the wall
Like trophies
I tell myself that
I've been down this road before
So I won't sing this song anymore (anymore)
Anymore (anymore)
Anymore (anymore)
Yeah-heh
ooh...
Said I've been down this road before
So I won't sing this song anymore (anymore)
Anymore (anymore)
Said I've been down on myself enough before
So I won't sing this song anymore
ooh...
I've got lines on my face like highways now
I'm chasing breezes kicking boulders
And all of the while just getting older
I leave pieces of paper
Pieces of myself along the way
Out the window
Out the window
I tell myself that
I'll come back for them before I go
Then I won't sing this song tomorrow
There's always something more distracting
And you take everything so seriously
Then you leave and burn up on re-entry
All these little victories
Gather up and hung on the wall
Like trophies
I tell myself that
I've been down this road before
So I won't sing this song anymore (anymore)
Anymore (anymore)
Anymore (anymore)
ooh...
So I won't sing this song anymore (anymore)
Anymore (anymore)
Said I've been down on myself enough before
So I won't sing this song anymore
ooh...

I think that this is about the slow prpgression of life as we live it. "All the little victories" that we gather up and hang on the wall. The way that we live and gather so much and yet we lose so much of ourselves as we grow and progress and by the end we just live the same path as we have done so many times before and eventually we give up and stop singing the same old song. It's about a changing point in life when you realise that what you have done is in the past and what is ahead is so much more important.
I agree with what your saying, it also seems as though "I leave pieces of paper Pieces of myself along the way" he's not satisfied with the way that life is working out. He's tired of repitition and not getting where or what he wanted out of life. "And you take everything so seriously Then you leave and burn up on re-entry". To me, that's saying that he has no down time to be normal and relax, and then when he's acused of being so serious it frustrates him and the only thing to do is walk away and then "burn up" or get pissed off at life. That would explain the dissatisfaction with life...
i love the chorus of this song, it's full of passion & it just begs to be sung along with.
i agree with the above meanings totally, but in my current situation this songs speaks to me of persistance, & the trials of persisting with things even though you know what may result (having been "down a road before"). continuing, trying to convince yourself that the result this time might be different, despite the past mistakes and outcomes - striving for happy endings.
obviously the above meanings are more accurate, but that's just what i personally get out of it.
