Cookie Jar Lyrics
And I would turn on the TV, but it's so embarrassing,
To see all the other people, I don't know what they mean.
And it was magic at first when they spoke without sound,
But now this world is gonna hurt.
You'd better turn that thing down.
Turn it around.
"Well, it wasn't me," says the boy with the gun,
"Sure I pulled the trigger, but it needed to be done,
Because life's been killing me ever since it begun.
You can't blame me, 'cuz I’m too young."
"You can't blame me; sure the killer was my son,
But I didn't teach him to pull the trigger of the gun.
It's the killing on this TV screen.
You can't blame me; it's those images he's seen."
"Well, you can't blame me," says the media man,
"Well I wasn't the one who came up with the plan.
And I just point my camera what the people want to see.
Man, it's a two-way mirror and you can't blame me."
"You can't blame me," says the singer of the song
Or the maker of the movie which he bases life on.
"It's only entertainment and as anyone can see,
Its smoke machines and make up man, you can't fool me."
It was you, it was me, it was every man.
We've all got the blood on our hands.
We only receive what we demand,
And if we want hell, then hell's what we'll have.
And I would turn on the TV, but it's so embarrassing.
To see all the other people, don't even know what they mean
And it was magic at first, but let everyone down,
And now this world's gonna hurt.
You'd better turn it around.
Turn it around.

Come on guys... no comments on this song!?! It's amazing. Once again, he takes his placid, soothing beach mentality and smooth melodies, and uses them to examine a painful subject in our society with a grace that only he can pull off. He's incredible...
just a thought about the title, it could be relating to "who stole the cookie from the cookie jar" where nobody will take the blame for committing the crime; when the blame is put on one person he will deny it and blame it on somebody else. i dont know...makes sense to me.
after hearing this song, i've concluded that jack johnson is an absolute genius. he is a philosopher of the new generation, and what he says in this song everyone needs to hear.

i must agree this song is extremely powerful in it's lyrics ad so rich in it's meaning, I am a fan of jack johnson, though i don't see him as a genius but a clever man with a good head on his shoulders, he is obviously well educated and it's really inspiring that he chose to write about something that is so under the radar, the way that he presents this issue is clever in that it lingures in our minds and hopefully we as his audience can learn to make a change no matter wht size in our society for the better.
If anyone's a fan, check this out. http://www2.warnerbros.com/web/wblcs/concert.jsp?concert=jack_johnson
On the live version on the warner bros website i noticed he completely leaves out the verse about blaming the singer of the song. also, towards the end of the song he says your souls gonna hurt instead of this worlds gonna hurt. just thought id point that out.
why "cookie jar"?

i think kmb13 is right it's such an interesting title but it totally makes sence the way u put it, i was wondering the same as kozmik but now i understand, thanx!
most writers could not write a song who's meaning is so obvious and be this poetic at the same time. most people could make the song obvious but not so poetic, or more poetic but very ambiguous...not jack, he makes it obvious and petic..absolute genious!
