i realize that the lyrics are rather straightforward but imma explain em anyways. idk if theres a background story or not like on epica and TBH but basically its a narrator speaking (really lamenting, but w/e) about a sailor who went out to sea and obviously didnt return for awhile. Not normally a big deal. But apparently he also left behind a lover (which, guys know, complicates things enormously)... so, the first verse is the narrator opening things by talking to the lover, referring to sirens which signaled the incoming of a ship and referring to this as "song of a promising heart" meaning that it could be her love returning. the second verse (with an EXCELLENT acoustic part in the background) is very obvious, the lover obviously waits and waits for the sailor and the mention of rain creates a great mental picture of her sadness. the next verse (really the chorus but w/e) starts with her lighting a candle (indicating that she'll be staying up longer into the night) and the next lines "firm as a mountain, she never will mourn, timeless awaiting the break of dawn" meaning that she wont cry or mourn him, she'll just "firmly and timelessly" await his return. the third verse refers to a hymn that her lover may have liked (?) and calling it a comfort to her as she cries. and thats pretty much it, the other two little verses mean the same things as their counterparts earlier in the song. enjoyyyy!!! :D
Maybe the obvious lyrics are what have prevented comment on this song. That being said, this song is just beautiful; lyrically, musically, and vocally.

this song means everything to me....
"A Sailorman's Hymn" The album's ballad. This song started out while Khan was visiting me in America. We were in the middle of writing Alexandria and the electricity went out in my house. So we lit some candles I started plucking the acoustic guitar with the main melody of the song. "Bright are the Candles that shineth tonight" was the original chorus. That inspired the connection between a Sailorman's loved one back home waiting for his return from the sea. Backup vocals by Icelander Rannveig Sif Sigurdardottir add the finishing touches to my favorite Kamelot ballad to date. "Hope springs eternal life"
i read a tragic play in high school with the same of same background, also set in ireland if i remember correctly, only it is a mother who is waiting for her last son to return (she had lost the other men of her family to drowning over the years). that play is so heart wrenching, and this song is a great compliment to it. could not recall the title of the play though.

This reminds me a lot of The Odyssey, focusing more on Odysseus' wife than the adventurer himself. However, this obviously isn't /about/ the Odyssey because it says Ireland, though, it could be a similar story perhaps rooted in Irish folklore.
