Shout To The Top! Lyrics

I was half in mind - I was half in need,
And as the rain came down - I dropped to my knees and prayed
I said "oh Heavenly thing - please cleanse my soul,
I've seen all on offer and I'm not impressed at all".
I was halfway home - I was half insane,
And every shop window I looked in just looked the same
I said send me a sign to save my life
'Cause at this moment in time there is nothing certain in
these day's of mine

Y'see it's a frightening thing when it dawns upon you
That I know as much as the day I was born
And though I wasn't asked (I might as well stay)
And promise myself each and every day - that -

When you're knocked on your back - an' your life's a flop
and when you're down on the bottom there's nothing else
but to shout to the top - shout!

Looks like I'm numero uno to post on this classic. Pretty self explanatory Geezer is as low as low can go

I'm not a massive Paul Weller fan but his lyrics are mighty impressive in their simplicity.

I love this song. And Paul Weller's voice. Good to listen to this when I'm feeling particularly uninspired.

This song is about the turmoil in England at the time. A big theme in Paul Weller's songs from this period is to talk about the labor movement and it being a front against Thatcherism.

In the song the man is begging "god" to save the state of the economy as shown by lines like...

"I was halfway home - I was half insane, And every shop window I looked in just looked the same"

Means every shop is closed.

"'Cause at this moment in time there is nothing certain in these day's of mine"

Talking about the uncertainty of they economy.

All the lines after that seem to be talking about someone who has lost their job and trying to give them inspiration and hope that things will get better if they make their voices heard.

I think it is a programatic Song, and it is about Paul Wellers career. After every Flop,he carried on, and came back to the top again. Great danceable Song, very uplifting. One of his masterpieces.
