Silence Kid Lyrics
Silent kid no one to remind you
You got no heel, no reels to remind you
Silent kid don't take your pawn shop
Home on the road, goddamn you
Silent kid don't lose your graceful tone
This is the city life, come on
Let's talk about leaving
Come on now, talk about your family
Your sister's cursed, your father's old and damned
Silent kid don't listen to the grandmother's advice about Ezra
Silent kid don't listen to their ayy...
Hand me the drumstick
Snare kick
Blues call upon I knew myself in
Into the spotlight
Ecstasy feels so warm inside
Till five hours later
I am chewin'
screwin'
Myself with my hand
You got no heel, no reels to remind you
Silent kid don't take your pawn shop
Home on the road, goddamn you
Silent kid don't lose your graceful tone
Let's talk about leaving
Your sister's cursed, your father's old and damned
Silent kid don't listen to the grandmother's advice about Ezra
Silent kid don't listen to their ayy...
Snare kick
Blues call upon I knew myself in
Into the spotlight
Ecstasy feels so warm inside
Till five hours later
I am chewin'
screwin'
Myself with my hand

I have a strong belief that no Pavement song actually means anythng...
"Everyday, its a gettin' closer, fallin faster than a rollercoaster, love like yours will surely come my way, a hey, a hey hey" or whatever. I hope they gave him credit on this one. For the melody anyway.
@placeboheadwound Thanks for pointing this out--I never noticed before.

Im almost positive its about childhood innocence- silent kid- not "corrupted" yet although his familly is terrible. About the gossip part- I read that- I guess the kid is silent in terms of not noisy, doesn't get in the way of anything. The best kids are normally seen as the silent ones- they dont talk, so they dont say anything bad. Then the person singing the song is doing "adult stuff" in comparison and hopes that the child never looses his innocence
I always assumed the final bit was about taking the drug ecstasy, chewing on pacifiers or lolly pops and ending the night alone.
As for the name, you might as well go around trying to get people to call Inna Godda Davida "In the Garden of Eden".
THANK YOU! Both completely valid points- and the Iron Butterfly might as well be the prototype for Pavement's lyrical process.

Anyone who has EVER done ecstasy will have no doubt as to the last stanza:

GREAT band. Don't have a flying f*ck what the song means, but who cares. It's still great!
What the hell is "Silence Kid"?
Pavement are one of those great bands where they have songs that really don't have any meaning - negating this website truly! Love the way it starts, as an intro to the album and the song. Before it kicks in, I'm sure he says, "Okay, Scott". The entire album has alot of references to drummers, maybe due to the fact that they kicked out the last drummer before this album. Kit? Drumstick? Snare Kick? Bloody Great song!
I dont know the meaning, but i think it is graceful tongue instead of tone.
SM said it was about gossip.
"Ezra"? Haha...I thought it was "Us, yeah"...Hmm.
