There's a lady who's sure
All that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to Heaven
When she gets there she knows
If the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for
Ooh ooh and she's buying a stairway to Heaven

There's a sign on the wall
But she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings
In a tree by the brook
There's a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven

Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, it makes me wonder

There's a feeling I get
When I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen
Rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who stand looking

Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, it really makes me wonder

And it's whispered that soon, if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn
For those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow
Don't be alarmed now
It's just a spring clean for the May queen
Yes, there are two paths you can go by
But in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on
And it makes me wonder

Your head is humming and it won't go
In case you don't know
The piper's calling you to join him
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow?
And did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind?

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all are one and one is all, yeah
To be a rock and not to roll

And she's buying a stairway to Heaven

    General Comment

I think the song is a commentary on the how there is temporary, artificial happiness that one can get through buying material goods, and that this has a destructive effect on nature. Mother nature would want humans to realize this.

Obviously, the song starts off with a woman in a store who fancies items in a store.

Line: "There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure, because 'cause you know sometimes words have two meanings" Interpretation: Picture the word 'Sale'. Are you really getting a sale, or are you being ripped off?

Line: In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings, Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven." Misgiven means to doubt or distrust Interpretation: The songbird represents nature, commenting that the way humans look at the world feel that it is not how the world actually is.

There's a feeling I get when I look to the West (Western, capitalist, materialistic society.. think California or USA) and my spirit is crying for leaving (being fed up being in a world where everything is materialistic)

"In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees, And the voices of those who stand looking."

    • The protagonist is thinking about the harm materialism does to nature, and that people notice the damage it does, but do not do anything to prevent it.

"And it's whispered that soon, if we all call the tune, Then the piper will lead us to reason. And a new day will dawn for those who stand long, And the forests will echo with laughter."

    • This describes that if everyone comes together in their belief that nature should be protected, a leader [the piper] will show them what kind of harm they are doing to nature.
    • The forest will echo with laughter (happiness) because they are saved from the destruction of materialism.

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now, It's just a spring clean for the May queen. Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run There's still time to change the road you're on. And it makes me wonder.

    • A person is surprised that Nature is causing a bustling in their hedgerow (artificial nature).... don't be alarmed, it's only nature
    • You can either value nature, or materialism

Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know, The piper's calling you to join him, (The idea that subconsciously, you feel as though you should be one with nature) Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow, and did you know Your stairway lies on the whispering wind? (Referring to the materialistic lady, a reminder that the winds of nature are real, and that she will not reach happiness because there is no foundation to her stairway)

And as we wind on down the road (As we walk down the road of life) Our shadows taller than our soul. (Our sins bigger than who we are) There walks a lady we all know (Materialistic lady) Who shines white light and wants to show (She thinks she knows the answers) How everything still turns to gold. (How nature can be destroyed and turned into something beautiful) And if you listen very hard (Listen to the Piper calling you to respect nature) The tune will come to you at last. (You will understand and realize what he is saying) When all are one and one is all (There is an interconnectedness between the earth and humans) To be a rock and not to roll. (To stay firm in your beliefs, and do not follow the way of the materialistic person)

And she's buying a stairway to heaven (And she still continues to buy items for happiness at the expense of the earth's natural resources.

Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
