Hats Off to (Roy) Harper Lyrics
When I done quit hollerin' baby
I believe I shake 'em on down
Get my babe won't be late
You know by that I mean seconds late
Ah must I holler
Must I shake 'em on down
Well I've been mistreated babe
I believe I'll shake 'em on down.
Shake 'em.
Well I ain't no monkey.
I can't climb no tree
No brown skin woman gonna make
No monkey out of me
I ain't no monkey
Sure can't climb no tree,
I been mistreated babe
I believe I'll shake 'em on down,
Well I've been mistreated babe
I believe I'll shake 'em on down.
Listen mama,
Put on your mornin' gown'
Put in your nightshirt
Mama we gonna shake 'em down
Must I holler
Must I shake 'em on down?
Gave my baby a twenty dollar bill,
If that don't get her,
Sure my shot, shot, shot-gun will,
Yeah, I gave my baby a twenty dollar bill,
If that don't get that woman,
I'm sure my shot-gun will.
Gonna go shoot her now...
I believe I shake 'em on down
Get my babe won't be late
You know by that I mean seconds late
Ah must I holler
Must I shake 'em on down
Well I've been mistreated babe
I believe I'll shake 'em on down.
Shake 'em.
Well I ain't no monkey.
I can't climb no tree
No brown skin woman gonna make
No monkey out of me
I ain't no monkey
Sure can't climb no tree,
I been mistreated babe
I believe I'll shake 'em on down,
Well I've been mistreated babe
I believe I'll shake 'em on down.
Listen mama,
Put on your mornin' gown'
Put in your nightshirt
Mama we gonna shake 'em down
Must I holler
Must I shake 'em on down?
Gave my baby a twenty dollar bill,
If that don't get her,
Sure my shot, shot, shot-gun will,
Yeah, I gave my baby a twenty dollar bill,
If that don't get that woman,
I'm sure my shot-gun will.

This is a cover of Shake Em Down by Bukka White
To my understanding, Led Zeppelin recorded this song because they admired the way Roy Harper didn't sell out. He stood by what he felt was right.
Roy Harper later showed his appreciation by donating the sleeve photograph for Physical Graffiti.
@excalibur2 he also sang Pink Floyd's "Have a Cigar"

@excalibur2 An excellent and brilliant song meaning and understanding. Thank-you! This is what I was looking for! Hats off to excalbur2!

It's a pretty good song, kinda blues-y.
Speaking of weird, Roy Harper is described as a real weirdo. He toured with Zeppelin briefly and could often be seen in the wings just off-stage shaking a rubber gorilla while they played.
They're similar because the lyrics from both of them come from a song by Bukka White called "Shake 'em on Down".
Anyone who doesn't know who Roy Harper is, if you've heard "Have A Cigar" by Pink Floyd(great song), that is Roy singing the song.
I once listened to this song when I was on a lot of drugs and it scared the crap out of me.
You don't like what Zeppelin liked if you don't like this song. It's not their best but I think it's decent. Cracks me up when he says--"no monkey....sho caint climb no tree"
ha...well...its not Led Zep's best, it is really different then their normal songs and I never really saw them as the type to sorta dedicate a song to someone like that! BUt hey! Its led Zep.... I like it cause its different though... i like to embrace the weird...
Wow, I had no idea so many people didn't like this song. I love it! I didn't know who Roy Harper was before today, though, just that I love "Have a Cigar" as well.
