Metal Lyrics

we're in the building where they make us grow
and I'm frightened by the liquid engineers
like you
my mallory heart is sure to fail
i could crawl around the floor just like I'm real
like you

the sound of metal I want to be you
i could learn to be a man
like you

plug me in and turn me on
oh everything is moving

i need my treatment it's tomorrow they send me
singing "I am an American"
do you?

picture this if they could make the change
i'd love to pull the wires from the wall
did you?

and who are you and how can I try?
here inside I like metal
don't you?

all I know is no one dies

The song gives me the vague impression that it's about a societal system that promotes nationalism and callousness.

The society is represented by the factory or "Building where they make us grow", where the products of said society are convinced that the ideology that is being instilled in them is a positive thing, evidenced by the following stanzas.

"The sound of metal I want to be you I should learn to be a man Like you"

"I need my treatment it's tomorrow they send me Singing "I am an American" Do you?"

I don't think that second one is meant to be a direct prod at America, but more of an example of national pride in general.

To be honest, the songs underlying message is unusually vague. The rest of the lines fit, and work with my interpretation, but only in so far as they don't contradict it. Those are the only two stanzas that really reveal a meaning in my opinion. Any other ideas?

I saw somebody (demeter) mention something about AI, which was a really interesting idea. That would make the song pretty conceptual, which isn't something outside of the pervue of Trents portfolio, but certainly isn't something he does often. Having said that, he didn't write the song, so anything goes, really.

I love this song, of course, the real props go out to Gary Numan, but I think Trent captivates it wonderfully in this piece. The unreleased studio version is excellent too, albeit a bit harder. This is one of my favorite songs to listen to.

okay wait wait, flash of inspiration kind of like a.i. maybe...he's really innocent 'all I know is no one dies'. He's maybe genetically engineered or a robot? 'I'm still confusing love with need' might be that whoever is growing or making him, he thinks he loves them but actually he just needs them because he has a childlike independency...and sometimes he just gets sick of it 'i'd love to pull the wires from the wall' but again, he needs them so he can't leave. He's afraid of them, he thinks he loves them, but he needs them.

wow...I'm the first person in two years to comment...
