I think the lyrics in this song are beautifully written.
A quote from Neil Tennant: "The words are about one of my best friends who died of Aids. The same person who had the party in 'Being Boring'. He died in 1989, and this is a description of his funeral. All the details are time: the cars in slow formation, and so on. He did have an uncle, who had been in the army all of his life and suddenly found himself at the funeral of his evidently gay nephew who'd died of Aids. I think it must have been quite a difficult situation for him, but he was really nice and dignified and spoke to all of his nephew's friends. I had to give a reading, and the bit I read was from the book of Revelations, which started 'I, John, saw a new Jerusalem', and at the end it says there's somewhere where there's no pain or fear; and I found it a really moving piece of prose, and attached it to the end of the song."
As far as i'm concerned this is the most touching song the boys have done. It hits home every time.
@Bilingual_Wench I totally agree! Each time I hear it it almost makes me cry. Neil Tennant is really a great songwriter whose talent, in my opinion, is not adequately appreciated. Propably because pop music is not considered as "real" art.

I've discovered this song the other day and have been listen to since then again and again. The one of most touchy gay song ever. I really don't know why they didn't play it in their concert in Moscow last year. So pity. Maybe next time?
I can hardly believe that this song was only released as a B-side (of the single „Being boring“). The song is quite untypical for the PSB. But the lyrics are so touching I could almost cry whenever I listen to it. For me Neil Tennant is a great song writer who is (unfortunately) not suffiently recognized. I guess because pop music is not considered as artistic as other music styles for many people. But that's what makes the PSB so outstanding in my opinion.
