SO THE FIRE IS ALMOST OUT AND THERE'S NOTHING LEFT TO BURN
I'VE RUN RIGHT OUT OF THOUGHTS AND I'VE RUN RIGHT OUT OF WORDS
AS I USED THEM UP, I USED THEM UP...
yeah THE FIRE IS ALMOST COLD AND THERE'S NOTHING LEFT TO BURN
I'VE RUN RIGHT OUT OF FEELING AND I'VE RUN RIGHT OUT OF WORLD
AND EVERYTHING I PROMISED, AND EVERYTHING I TRIED
yeah EVERYTHING I EVER DID I USED TO FEED THE FIRE
I USED TO FEED THE FIRE
I USED TO FEED THE FIRE
I USED TO FEED THE FIRE
BUT THE FIRE IS ALMOST OUT IS ALMOST OUT...
AND THERE'S NOTHING LEFT TO BURN
NO THERE'S NOTHING LEFT TO BURN
not even this...
AND THE FIRE IS ALMOST DEAD AND THERE'S NOTHING LEFT TO BURN
I'VE FINISHED EVERYTHING...
AND ALL THE THINGS I PROMISED, AND ALL THE THINGS I TRIED
yeah ALL THE THINGS I EVER DREAMED I USED TO FEED THE FIRE
I USED TO FEED THE FIRE
I USED TO FEED THE FIRE
I USED TO FEED THE FIRE
BUT THE FIRE IS ALMOST OUT...
HALF MY LIFE I'VE BEEN HERE
HALF MY LIFE IN FLAMES
USING ALL I EVER HAD TO KEEP THE FIRE ABLAZE
TO KEEP THE FIRE ABLAZE
TO KEEP THE FIRE ABLAZE
TO KEEP THE FIRE ABLAZE...
BUT THERE'S NOTHING LEFT TO BURN
NO THERE'S NOTHING LEFT TO BURN
AND THE FIRE IS ALMOST OUT
THE FIRE IS ALMOST OUT
yeah THE FIRE IS ALMOST OUT
ALMOST OUT, ALMOST OUT
ALMOST OUT, ALMOST OUT...
AND THERE'S NOTHING LEFT TO BURN
I'VE RUN RIGHT OUT OF THOUGHTS AND I'VE RUN RIGHT OUT OF WORDS

HEY FOOLIOS I don't think it's just about aging as a person, but as an artist. Art is like a fire because it consumes who you are, it takes all of who and what you are just to make something beautiful, and RS is out of things to throw into his fire. You've got to admit; the Cure do not have a huge range of themes. Their real talent is in finding new ways to approach the same question. Making a song about how you've got nothing to make a song with--brilliant!
I know this is probably what the song isn't about, but interestingly, 39 is pronounced "san kyuu" in japanese, which is a way of saying "Thank You." I wonder if Robert was also telling someone thank you while telling them it was over.
i'm 39 now and i can understand where he's coming from. it reminds me of the song "end" from wish. robert always thinks that he's given all he has to give to us, there is nothing left. he can't see going on like this and doesn't see any future writting more songs......then comes under the stars.

Quite simply, it's about getting old. Fat Bob wrote it when he was 39, hence the name.
And it's about drugs.
@xtiandeth What do you mean by Fat Bob? Shut up!

When I first hear this song, I thought: his is the end of The Cure...
For me, it's pretty obvious what it is about, feeling tired of the life he had... He can feed the fire anymore, so he wants to throw the towel... (or disband The Cure)... He was not feeling excited anymore with being in the band...
Lucky we he cahnged his mind...
I have to agree with xtiandeth about the age. Because it is the age that Robert was when he wrote it. And the fact that he was only doing music for 21 years when that album was released wouldn't make sense of the title.
i think it may be about aging...but i also think it could be about a romance that is dying, and how he never even expected it to last. that hes been trying and trying for years, but he knew it was all going to come to a tragic end someday and he just kept it going by "feeding the fire" "and all the things i promised, and all the things i tried yeah all the things i ever dreamed i used to feed the fire"

i think its about him not feeling as vital to the music scene as he once was but thats not true they have plenty young fans such as myself who were introduced to the band by their newer stuff. then again it could be about getting older i read somewhere he dreaded approaching middle age.bye the way i think pornography invented industrial rock doncha think dawgs
