Numb Lyrics

yeah this is how it ends
after all these years
tired of it all
hopelessly helplessly broken apart
he finally falls
he doesn't want to think
doesn't want to feel
doesn't want to know what's going on
says there's nothing he can do will change anything
he doesn't want to know what's going wrong
because he's in love with a drug
one that makes him numb
one that stops him feeling at all
he's in love with a drug
forget everyone
he really doesn't care anymore
anymore...

yeah this is how it ends
after all this time
everything just fades away
worn-out and empty and all alone
with nothing left to say
oh it's all too big to make a difference
it's all too wrong to make it right
yeah everything is too unfair
everything too much to bear
he doesn't have the strength left for the fight
says all he wants is the drug
the one that makes him numb
the one that stops him feeling at all
he just wants to take the drug
forget everyone
he doesn't want to care anymore
just keeps loving the drug
the one that makes him numb
the one that stops him feeling at all
just keeps loving the drug
the drug that he's become
he isn't really here anymore...

and that makes me cry

where did you pull Kurt Cobain from?

A possibility I had, although not saying it for sure is that its about someone who's happy to stay on anti-depressants like valium instead trying to fight his illness alone?

@rollman Robert Smith has actually confirmed it's about Kurt Cobain's death and how it impacted him.

This song is one of the more meaningful songs by The Cure for me. My boyfriend and i have just gotten together for a second time. And he has practicly promised me that he will stop doing drugs for me. They have been an escape for him kinda..to just make all the pain in life go away. But i cant say that i believe him fully in his promise. I know it must be hard...and i know that 'He's In Love With The Drug.' every single time i hear this song i think of him and it almost brakes me down.

@TinyBlackRose 16 years ago! Is he still using? Just curious?

This is about a heroin addict, though I don't know who this song is about specifiically.

it is about Kurt Cobain

@seraphius I think this is extremely doubtful. Among other things, I don't know of any evidence that Smith (or anyone else in the Cure for that matter) knew Cobain. The timing would be rather odd too, since this song came out after Cobain's highly publicised suicide, which certainly isn't even referenced.

Also, it seems to me that Kurt's big psych issue was untreated depression, that he was self-medicating (an all-too-common problem). I get the impression that his doctor(s) hadn't really tried to do anything about it; he should have been at least trying more, umm, traditional antidepressants, but they...

They're not bad lyrics, but geez I'm glad The Cure got back on track with Bloodflowers.

If its about anyone its about Lol Tolhurst who was the Cure's original drummer/keyboardist. He was one of Robert's best friends but got so fucked up on drugs that he couldnt even contribute anything (Porl and Robert actually played all the Keyboards on Kiss Me and Roger O'Donnell played during the Kiss Me tour ) and although he was still a member during the Disintegration sessions he contributed nothing to the album due to his drug use.

That's exactly what I heard it was about. Funnily enough, this song started playing as I clicked on the lyrics.

But yeah, I heard it was about Lol and he got so addicted to drugs. And that's all that really mattered to him. He didn't want to know anything that was going on.

Thankgod someone else knew it was about Lol

@King of Some Island I'm quite positive you're right. Tolhurst's drug problem was with alcohol, specifically — one of the worst when it comes to addiction and general life-ruiningness; although it has a much higher LD-50, in some ways it's even more dangerous than heroin because it's (1) legal and therefore easy to obtain, and (2) easier to self-administer (even when you're already f***ed up). When you look at the song, though, it makes perfect sense that it's about Lol. I don't know why this didn't occur to me when I first heard it, but it...

I think its a depression induced drug binge. "Yeah this is how it ends after all these years tired of it all hopelessly helplessly broken apart he finally falls"

He has been depressed for so long, he never escapes the depression. His life feels as if its falling apart. It finally consumes him("he finally falls").

"He doesn't want to think doesn't want to feel doesn't want to know what's going on"

There are many bad situations in his life. He wants to forget and escape it all, never have to think about it. Not even know it is happening.

He starts taking drugs to deal with the pain of life, and depression, becoming addicted, hence "he's in love with a drug."

Through the song the addiction gets worse, he changes completely. And by the end, he is so drugged out his brain isn't functioning right, he killed his memory, and completely screwed him up mentally. "he isn't really here anymore..."

This song is from the point of view of a close friend(maybe relative), they notice how much he has changed because of the drug use.

It is a very sad song to say the least. I've seen this happen many times..

My Interpretation
Cover art for Numb lyrics by Cure, The

Both "Want" and this song are about Kurt Cobain. Robert Smith has said so in an interview. They met in a party in 1989 and were known to be friends ever since, and were seen together lots of times, however almost none of their photos together were retrieved, that's why their relationship is still so underlying.
