Blissed and Gone Lyrics
the sun has left
the rays are gone
and all the kids have left their tears
and gone home
sweet seventeen
sour twenty-nine
and i can't explain myself
what i hope to find
you were all so kind
when i was near
and if you're still feeling down
then maybe you need me around
to love and hold you
don't say i hadn't told you so
maybe you need me around
i had no luck
i had no shame
i had no cause
just seventeen days of rain
and you in my eyes
just one more song
to slay this earth
and i can't explain myself
just what it's worth
it was all i had
but not all i need
and i can't escape the fact
that i still bleed
and if you're still feeling down
and if it seems way too long
then maybe you need me around
i had no voice
i had no drive
i had no choice
i done my time
i had myself
i had my band
i had my love
i had no hand in watching it all
fall apart
and if you're still feeling down
then maybe you need me around
to lift and scold you
to see you crashing all right now
maybe you need me around
the rays are gone
and all the kids have left their tears
and gone home
sweet seventeen
sour twenty-nine
and i can't explain myself
what i hope to find
you were all so kind
when i was near
and if you're still feeling down
then maybe you need me around
to love and hold you
don't say i hadn't told you so
maybe you need me around
i had no luck
i had no shame
i had no cause
just seventeen days of rain
and you in my eyes
just one more song
to slay this earth
and i can't explain myself
just what it's worth
it was all i had
but not all i need
and i can't escape the fact
that i still bleed
and if you're still feeling down

The lyrics in this song are some of the most personal lyrics Corgan has ever written. I think the song is about his divorce and how he felt like he lost everything that was important to him towards the end of the Mellon Collie era. I think the line "sour 29" pinpoints the when to 96/97 (Corgan was born in '67). This is also when his wife divorced him and when their touring keyboardist died and he kicked Chamberlain out of the band. I think these lines pretty well sum this up and speak to how he felt like his world was crashing around him.
i had myself / i had my band / i had my love / i had no hand in watching it all / fall apart
With that context, the rest of the lyrics fit together to paint a scene of longing for his wife and unhappiness with his life.
I came to slay.. and then play.
Words of advice.... Hold your nose.
This song is, to me, about realizing that even after a lot of time has passed, you are still in love with someone. Incredibly moving song.
good song. Its very slow. Something that i like to go to sleep to. I think its about him being in love with a girl who left, and he is just saying that if she wants to come back, that it would be okay with him. And that he misses her, but he doesn't want to quite come out and say it.
this is the last song on the second cd of the greatest hits, and i think it's a perfect swansong because it's basically saying that music has saved him and that it'll always be around. not like losing a lover - the fans will always have the music. and that's what i reckon the song is about, the fact that all though the smashing pumpkins are over, they'll be there when you need them. anyways, that's what i think...
beautiful, although i don't agree with the version they chose for the release..
amazing... unique sounding but yet very likeable. I like Billys voice in this song!
I agree with what 56 said mostly. Its about missing a lost love one or a lost love one missing you, or both.
This song I believe has to do with the ending of the Smashing Pumpkins. "The sun has left, the rays are gone" -We did well, but now it's ending "All the kids have left their tears and gone home" -All the people at the last shows were upset (tears) but now they are going about life again (gone home) "You were all so kind when I was near" -Talking about how nice and personable the fans are/were "If you're still feeling down then maybe you need me around" -Being upset and putting on your fav Pumpkins cd "Just one more song to slay this earth and I can't explain myself just what it's worth" -Even at the last show, it would be hard to not keep playing, at some point it must end and it will be very sad for him "I had no hand in watching it all fall apart" -Referencing how his bandmates wanted it to end even though the band was all he wanted.
Perhaps the song brings in so many details of what happened during the downfall of the band and this is kind of his way of coping with the reality that all he ever wanted was this band and no matter what he did, it is falling apart arund him. poor billy... :(
Not that I want to tear down any of the ideas posted, but keep in mind that the song was originally written during the Adore sessions, so it can't be about the break up of the band or the fans after the last show. I think it makes sense that it is about a passed love that is regretting their decision to break up and wants to get back together. And Billy is saying I told you we shouldn't have broken up.
