So I'll wait for you
Where I always wait
Behind the signs that sell the news
I'll watch for you like yesterday
And hope for you
One day that once
Spent out on me
And up 'til late
I search for you
Your hat pushed straight
Away from me
Your measured step
Heads up you win
Always too late
If I could just once catch your eye
Invisible against the words
That hold you down in solitude
And never let you go
The way that every time
My eyes just close
Like lids of wooden men in file
I put you under rainy day
Your hat's all off and I've gone away
Where I always wait
Behind the signs that sell the news
I'll watch for you like yesterday
One day that once
Spent out on me
And up 'til late
I search for you
Away from me
Your measured step
Heads up you win
Always too late
Invisible against the words
That hold you down in solitude
And never let you go
My eyes just close
Like lids of wooden men in file
I put you under rainy day
Your hat's all off and I've gone away

call me crazy but i think this is one of the cures best songs beautiful and melodic
@radioheadster I can't actually say you're not crazy (technically it's unethical to diagnose you without examining you first <g>), but I don't think there's any reason to think you might be — or that you might just have poor taste or something either. I love this song.

It's a magnificent example of something the Cure has done quite a few times: combining cheerful, bouncy music with sorrowful lyrics. The really amazing thing is how well it works.

@radioheadster You're not crazy. I totally agree.

The meaning of a song or poem is not set in stone, good writing is meant to open doors and leave space, these spaces are to be filled by our individual life experiences or what we may wish or have wished for. This song is very meaningful personally. It is a great reminder for what possibly could have been and what no longer can be. A story of young man hoping to catch the eye of a girl he dreams of. Time at that point means nothing to him and the worth of waiting is never questioned. The hat is symbolic of attraction/attention. The woman is engulfed in a past she cannot break free of, her eye catches no one, her sight is blinded by rejection. She is a self imposed prisoner. Her mind is the warden. She walks the same path daily, looks his way but never sees the man. Her life has always been a measured step, her secrets never shared. Her solitude and the people that caused it are like unbreakable chains, their words were added link by link over a lifetime. The hat hides the eyes, covers the ears and fortifies the walls. As she walks by day after day his eyes slowly close like night falling, like a clock that is running out of time. He has realized just as a soldier who is vastly outnumbered, he cannot win, yet he continues to show up and stand guard by the sign, day after day, until the clock ticks no longer. With fallen eyes he gets blown away by the wind. Ironically her hat is also blown away and her eyes start to open, a clock ticks again but this one is hers. The words start to become transparent, not invisible yet but she can finally start to see through them. As she walks by she looks at her surroundings and for once sees them for how they truly are. She glances over at the sign, she feels something is missing but no one is there, for it's 2 late.
A simple song written about two people who never get the timing right. Now if you were to hear her version of the song it may mean something totally different, or maybe it would have a similar meaning? That is the beauty of this song. Simply written but endless possibilities...
Maybe about a secret crush almost stalker like or it could be about someone who enjoys being and meeting the same person everyday, yet everyday brings new excitement to them.
So glad this is on the new box set. Such a killer jam.
this song is SO PRETTY. it seems sad...like he wants nothing more to just see her...
"So I'll wait for you Where I always wait Behind the signs that sell the news"
this gives the impression of a secret romance
"And hope for you One day that once Spent out on me And up 'til late"
hoping one day they dont have to hide the secret.
"I search for you Your hat pushed straight Away from me Your measured step Heads up you win Always too late"
this is brilliant wordsmanship. He cant find her and he knows she could find him if she wanted to.
"If I could just once catch your eye Invisible against the words That hold you down in solitude And never let you go The way that every time My eyes just close Like lids of wooden men in file I put you under rainy day Your hat's all off And I'm gone away..."
please let me see you again and I wont disapoint you.
(this song may be the most brilliant love song ever recorded that noone heard, it's buried as a b side on the love song single)
@fuckoffanddieok I actually got the single because I saw that the B-side wasn't on any of their albums; just had to have every single Cure song that existed anywhere. I'd just discovered them in '87 or '88 (actually, I'd just discovered that there was popular music out there that was really good — I was just a kid and the '80s in America was largely a cultural wasteland), so (Kiss Me)^3 was the first album of theirs I got (drove my parents mad, I'm sure, listening to music nonstop!).

i think this song is about a relationship or some sort. and how no matter what the girl does or says about him, he'll always be waiting 4 her. and how the girl is always avoiding him, and he feels that if she were to look at him once, and him catch her eye, that maybe... just maybe, things will change.
To me, I see this song as a stranger that sees this girl everyday and is in love at first sight, but is too shy to talk to her. About the title "2 late" I think it means he plans to get to know her but he is always too late and shes gone.
I don't know, I could be completely wrong.
oh the fun and crazy suspense of being into someone. lovesick, and happily beating along so the song goes.
