Fascination Street Lyrics
Oh it's opening time
Down on Fascination street
So let's cut the conversation
And get out for a bit
Because I feel it all fading
And paling and I'm begging you
To drag you down with me
To kick the last nail in
Yeah, I like you in that
Like I like you to scream
But if you open your mouth
Then I can't be responsible
For quite what goes in
Or to care what comes out
So just pull on your hair
Just pull on your pout
And let's move to the beat
Like we know that it's over
If you slip going under
Slip over my shoulder
So just pull on your face
Just pull on your feet
And let's hit opening time
Down on Fascination street
So pull on your hair
Pull on your pout
Cut the conversation
Just open your mouth
Pull on your face
Pull on your feet
And let's hit opening time
Down on Fascination street

So let's cut the conversation
And get out for a bit
Because I feel it all fading
And paling and I'm begging you
To drag you down with me
To kick the last nail in

But if you open your mouth
Then I can't be responsible
For quite what goes in

Just pull on your pout

Slip over my shoulder
So just pull on your face

And let's hit opening time
Down on Fascination street
Pull on your pout
Cut the conversation
Just open your mouth
Pull on your face
Pull on your feet
And let's hit opening time
Down on Fascination street

its about him .... performing... people worshipping him in his concerts.... note the references to putting on his hair and face etc... the audience screaming when he opens his mouth etc.. i believe i heard him explain the meaning in an interview on tv when it was released.. sorry to spoil it for those that had other very valid interpretations... its what it means to him but of course can have various other associations for others.....
That is what I thought it was about initially, and I still do. It makes sense. Sometimes, people try to read too much into the lyrics of a song or poem. I have listened to it probably about 300 times

I looked into this because I thought I had read him saying something about Mardi Gras once, and found this: In an interview with Select magazine, vocalist and primary songwriter Robert Smith said: "I was thinking of Bourbon Street in New Orleans when I wrote it - I was getting ready to go there and I thought: what the fuck do I think I'm going to find ? It's about the incredulity that I could still be fooled into looking for a perfect moment."

That said, this song could definitely have a dual meaning. Both things make sense, esp....

Just open your mouth and I'll put that secret substance in. Just close your eyes and it's not your fault, nor mine. I'm sorry it will kill us but we need to be free. Lets remove our inhibitions.
Perhaps he is mocking someone who always goads him into getting drunk or taking drugs. It is forcing him to "pull on that pout" so that they can drop in whatever. It's interesting to think of from that perspective. Maybe it's his girlfriend, or buddy. A bad influence. He tries to hold on to his morals, but that clever persuasion: "i cannot be responsible...". It could be that she doesn't know how to connect with him, but wants to enjoy herself with him. He want's the same, but he believes they can do it through trying to communicate and share their true feelings, without the substance.
This song is trying to make them understand how they sound. It feels like a sad song, a frustration with the repetition of their behavior.
I think it's about being in a relationship where it's only for show, where you're only together because it's what's expected of you.
I think it's about a woman he was infatuated with, not necessarily a relationship, maybe one of those complicated things when there's a person you've been obsessed with for a long, long time. A hot female friend maybe who's "friendzoned" you or whatever you want to call it. Hence why they were 'fascinated' by one another. But as soon as it happens you realise it was all in your head and there's no real connection there. But as soon as they hit "fascination street" as it were, the fascination, the passion, fades and it's not exciting anymore and there's nothing other than that superficial fascination they initially had with one another. As the passion fades it just becomes detached, meaningless sex. And with all of the memories, all of the fantasies and dreams, it's really extremely depressing.
This song is amazing. The bass and drums layered in with the various guitar and keyboard riffs are awesome.
this song is about people's desire to be entertained by something out of the norm and people pretending to be something they aren't to accomodate these needs
I think this song is about a relationship thats not going so well, and all they really have left is the physical side of things. For example, the "cut the conversation, just open your mouth" line, among others.
Yep sex...period...."But if you open your mouth Then I can't be responsible For quite what goes in Or to care what comes out"

Awesome! Probably my favorite Cure song and one of the best of the 80s period! It reminds me a lot of being in college and on Thursday nights, just saying "F*** It - we're going out and blowing off some steam!".
I have a road labeled 'fascination street' painted on my kitchen floor. Sweet, no?
