i think doug is trying to say that as long as you work at something you don't enjoy, simply to live in our society you are a nobody-- you're a waste of flesh
"but so don't be hard on yourself, there's plenty of flesh to go around" to me, this lyric says something like "it's alright that you're mediocre and unhappy, join the club"
I don't think he's saying that people who work at something they hate are "nobody." I think his true opinion of the matter is at the end of the lyrics when he says that no one has to do anything with their life or flesh because who says we do? But at the same time, we will have to face life and adapt to it sooner or later. It sucks, but we'd be dumb to think we can avoid it.
Obvious, but I think true, the repetition of the lyrics "So and So" are critising plurality and monotony of life.

and as with a lot of his lyrics, he is suggesting life (even in our sense of the word, a productive one) can be seen as fruitless, mundane and out of our control.

the first is of someone who is...
the first is of someone who is seemingly productive in the economy and has a balanced mindset and a good grip on modern life. And for the second, I've speculated he is talking about someone refusing to start making the decisions for their future.
his criticism of the first is that the person is not truly happy with their job and life situation despite how right it looks. the second person, is recieving some social shame for refusing to face the reality. he comforts this person in bascially saying, "No one can tell you the right way to live."
grim, but true in this song and in my own experience, every way to live has its drawbacks. modern life puts us in a situation in which we are stuck in a lame situation with no real alternatives.
I'm not sure this was necessary, the song really explains itself and is pretty general. I just love it so much.
