I agree with you stop pretending and cault and I am equally surprised at the lack of comments on this truly amazing song. I just saw Built to Spill last night and they played this song which was the main song I really wanted to hear live. It was so raw and filled with emotion and for me it was the peak of their performance. That being said seeing them live was one of the best experiences of my life.
Living in the moment is all we have to truly grab a hold of life and live it in its fullest. People spend too much time being a slave to the clock either wishing miserabe time away or wishing for old times to come back. Making the best of every moment no matter where you are is the way to live.
People dont realize what an incredibly silly idea "possesion" is. In this society of greed and consumers people actually believe they own a segment of land and have the right to buy and sell it. We belong to the land not the other way around. I believe that is where the line "this would still feel dumb back where your from" comes from.
It's saying that everything you "own" is really just fake, and the place that you call home is just where you happen to be, you could be anywhere. Our little lives are so insignifigant and pointless, and we are trapped by time and confinded to what we "have" now and will never have more. but "guess that's all fair now because guess that's all there ever was, gray and sprawling save your crawling" is saying, don't bother crawling and groping around in the pointless, material things we think matter in our daily lives. "do you want to save your life?" look at things as somethign more.
Time is really just a big trap....it is not even real, but it runs our lives....we made it up....but what time is really is memories...and the future...not little metel hands on a clock
The first part is asking what do we human beings really own? anything we think we own is not really ours since we'll all die eventually and we can't bring anything we've made or earned with us. The last part says that there will always be gray, nothing is for sure, time changes things, and time is in control. I guess saving your life means acknowledging this inevitable fact.
The first 2 mins. & 5 secs. of this song is pure ethereal, transcendental musical bliss. Every track from Keep It Like a Secret is great and this song is certainly no exception. When the guitar breaks in at 1 min. 35 secs. mark it gets elevated to something truly great.

ok now for the song:
we are easily trapped by this idea that meaning in our lives is ascertained by time (past or future). to truly save our lives we must latch on to the present (in essence - timelessness). the consequences of this are immense, including a great devaluation of material possessions (such as houses).
I agree with your notion regarding this conditioned response of the general mentality to segment life as either an analysis of the past or a wait for the future, neither of which actually exist as right now is eternity. The present is a moment which encompasses all space and time. I was recently listening to this song while running and this Bruce Lee quote emerged in my thoughts, "The timeless moment. – The "moment" has no yesterday or tomorrow. It is not the result of thought and therefore has no time." I think it is rather in keeping with the idea present in your post.
I'm seeing them Nov.18th in Vancouver and I want to see this live more than any other of their tracks; you're lucky you got to see it performed live. Do you know if they play it often or were you just lucky to be treated to a rare performance of the song?
Remember were Doug was born and raised, Twin Falls, Idaho. I was raise in Idaho as well and I can confirm that many of my contemporaries were in a time trap, living in a past that never was.
So many felt so certain, in their bones, that they were living life as it should be, but it they never realized how narrow and confined it really was. They found it difficult to appreciate that other people might have a different perspective.
This is not to bee too critical of my time in that community, but I had to leave it behind, because it seemed like a trap. This could apply to many people, from many communities around the world.
