Just Like Heaven Lyrics
This song does something to my insides. It is truly amazing. To me it's about a situation that occurs in many relationships. A guy and a girl, love each other madly. She tells him how she feels, but he doesn't say what he feels outloud to her, he only thinks of all the amazing ways he loves her. She thinks that because he doesn't say it, that he doesn't love her. But she doesn't understand that he does love her, he loves her so much it chokes him up and he can't say the words! Hehehe there we are. Dammit i LOVE this song. The music makes me feel like im in a dream which is why it fits so well with the lyrics!
I agree on all points. And just to add to it, the last few lines starting with 'Daylight licked me into shape" talks about how he no longer has her, for whatever reason. And how distraught he is even though he had trouble expressing his love for her when they were together. I've liked this song for quite some time but I've never looked up the lyrics; a few lines I misheard here and there definitely add to the song now that they're cleared up. One of my faves along with Boys Don't Cry, Charlotte Sometimes, and Same Deep Water...

This song is just sad. Dreamy at the beginning, but really lonely at the ending. This is the theme song of my life, now and forever...
It's the classic Men Are from Mars/Women Are from Venus. He loves her with all his heart, she is too blinded by insecurity to see and he is too lost in himself to show it. Bummer. Been there before.
The best part is the flow of the song, the way the lyrics are carried with the flow ("Dancing in the deepest oceans/Twisting in the water/Just like a dream"). It's a great technical blending of the two song elements that just catches your ear the first time you hear it, and makes you enjoy it forever.
I am replying over 8 years later, oddly enough I have a strange story to share about this song. 8 years ago a man, young man then maybe 22 that I just adored with all my 21 year old heart - we were on this weird wild rollercoaster type relationship...it was so obvious we were more than fond of each other. Anyway, the last night I saw him, we were in his truck, he played this song, it was funny because he made the intent to play this song not by chance. I hadn't heard the song in years...always was...

I hadn't heard the song in years...always was a cure fan...and well what did I do... I froze, classic "anna" empty response. I knew our paths were either going to continue or completely end. Of course, they ended...never heard from him again. It's always been something I was sad about...oh well. But your analysis of the meaning of this song is dead on :) makes me smile!
I've always interpreted this song to be about one of those rare dreams you have where either a real or imagined girl is absolutely perfect for you. It doesn't matter what you're doing with her, you're having an incredible time.
"You're just like a dream..." being some forshadowing.
Then, the bridge going:
"Daylight licked me into shape I must have been asleep for days And moving lips to breathe her name I opened up my eyes And found myself alone Alone Alone above a raging sea That stole the only girl I loved And drowned her deep inside of me"
Being that feeling when you wake up and feel like you've had the longest, most intense dream ever. And realizing the "dream girl" doesn't actually exist or even have a name that you know.
The raging sea being your mind, where that perfect girl from your dream has now been lost forever.
I'd never even considered that the song's about oral sex, this makes a lot more sense to me.

@StudyinScarlet Yep. After listening to the song for years and not thinking much about the lyrics as a cohesive thing until recently, this is the interpretation I came to as well. Well put.

@StudyinScarlet I had one of those dreams the other night. Thought of this song and this comment (which I've read before). I always thought this was the best interpretation of the song, because I've had those dreams before.

Something about the empty feeling I had yesterday morning when I woke up solidified it for me. Usually I just brush it off, but I still feel kind of upset.

According to Smith, "The song is about hyperventilating–kissing and fainting to the floor." The lyrics were inspired by a trip with his then-girlfriend (and later wife) Mary Poole to Beachy Head in southern England. Smith said the opening line of the song ("Show me, show me, show me how you do that trick") refers to his childhood memories of mastering magic tricks, but added "on another [level], it's about a seduction trick, from much later in my life".
I remember hearing and really liking this song (but not really listening to the lyrics) in '91 when dating with my very first girlfriend. I was at my worst puberty at the time, pretty much lost and not really knowing how to handle the relationship with this absolutely magical girl who, being slightly younger and a somewhat shy and reserved was not expressing her affection in the way that I thought I wanted. I'm not talking about anything sexual, just some abstract "little things" I felt were missing but could not explain. After about 18 months of frustration I dumped her for another girl - a lot "easier" and outgoing one who didn't make me think about all the relationship stuff all the time. I remember even feeling a bit angry towards this ex-girlfriend (not sure why), even when reading her tear-stained letters asking what she had done wrong and telling me about her family issues. I selfishly dumped her at the worst possible moment.
It took me a while but I finally realized what I had lost. I did not care at all about this new girl (actually strongly disliked her after some time). I could not understand why I had been such an ass and what the hell I had thought was missing in the previous relationship, but I was so ashamed of myself that I found it impossible to beg her to come back. All my later relationships were just poor excuses for what I now knew I really wanted.
About seven years later I bought "Kiss me, Kiss me, Kiss me" and was absolutely blown away by how fittingly these lyrics described what I had gone through and felt like back then and what I had only realized afterwards. All the things that really matter had always been there, I had just been too blind (stupid) and confused with myself to see it.
btw, I finally ended up marrying and having kids with my "just like heaven" girl :D
I honestly think that this song doesn't have jack shit to do w/ sex. I think it's about a guy that really loves this girl &the girl doesn't realize it& so she leaves. And after he reminisces. . . thats my opinion at least.
I think it can be about different timing of feelings between two people. The girl loves him, and though he has feelings for her, he still wants to make sure they are genuine. He later realizes that he's been "asleep for days" and realizes how strongly he loves her. However, he didn't speak up about his feelings, or once he did, she had already moved on.
Sounds to me like it's about people with a gap in affection. Like Robert and the girl both have these great times together, but Robert builds it up to too much. He gets this emotional "raging sea" of feelings towards her and in a sense drowns her in it but smothering the simple good times with a more powerful feeling that she doesn';t seem to share. But yea, I agree, It's bloody brilliant.
I think its about one of those dreams where everything is great and you wake up thinking its true, excited to tell everyone, then realize it was just a dream and lay in bed depressed for a few hours
