Oh, You Are the Roots That Sleep Beneath My Feet and Hold the Earth in Place Lyrics
I met you through a common friend
In the attic of my parent's house
And though I didn't know it then
I soon was finding out
You are the roots that sleep beneath my feet
And hold the earth in place
Each time a faucet opens
Words are spoken
The water runs away
And I hear your name
No, nothing has changed
There was this book I read and loved
The story of a ship
Who sailed around the world and found
That nothing else exists
Beyond its own two sails
And wooden shell
And what is held within
All else is sure to pass
We clutch and grasp
And debate what's truly permanent
But when the wind starts to shift
There's no argument
I sing and drink and sleep on floors
And try hard not to be annoyed
By all these people worrying about me
So when I'm suffering through some awful drive
You occasionally cross my mind
It's my hidden hope that you are still among them
Well, are you?
Oh, you are the roots that sleep beneath my feet
And hold the earth in place
Each time a curtain opens
Sunlight pours in
A lifetime melts away
And we share a name
On some picturesque grave
In the attic of my parent's house
And though I didn't know it then
I soon was finding out
You are the roots that sleep beneath my feet
And hold the earth in place
Each time a faucet opens
Words are spoken
The water runs away
And I hear your name
No, nothing has changed

That nothing else exists
Beyond its own two sails

And we share a name
On some picturesque grave

Im really not sure why this song cannot just be interpreted as an ode to an ancestor that he never had the chance to meet. The first verse might be seeing an old dust covered picture of the person with his parent (the 'common friend'). He asks questions from family members and is fascinated by he or she. I guess the biggest giveaway would just be the 'we share a name' phrase, which implies family and that he has seen his or her grave. Frankly this is much more meaningful and beautiful than another romance song, they are a dime a dozen.
who the hell meets people in the attic of their parents' house?
@goldminegutted i guess thats why its worth singing about

why does it have to be about a girl?
the first impression i got was that it was about drugs. it could speak to a very powerful addiction, or any sort of love. he never mentions anything but "you" and his need to stick with this thing. and of course you'd first try a drug in the attic of someone's house.
who knows. odds are it's a girl, but keep the mind open to other possibilities.
Man! First of all, your username is great. Saves The Day is so sweet. Second, you posted this awesome entry on my birthday. And, foremost... Marvelous observation! Conor has always been one to drug it up, ya know? It's just a natural assumption to believe this is all about a girl. ...Surprised I never really thought of that drug-interpretation, myself. Good job, thisisnotanexit. :D

I'm pretty sure it's about someone who he loved who is dead.
and we share a name on some picturesque grave--maybe conor isn't dead yet, but he knows someday he will be and this comforts him. also, you are the roots that sleep beneath my feet...this could be taken literally as underground, as in buried.
this book. i wanna find this book.
anyone got an idea?
the reference is in several songs.
beautiful song.. i love the titles of these songs!
I wonder if it is an other referance to one of the two girls that he seems to sing about the most? All in all, it is a beautiful song
ya know what, i can't get over conor's amazing ability to word feelings so perfectly to make them so subtle, yet so beautiful....for example: "I sing and drink and sleep on floors and try hard not to be annoyed by all these people worrying about me so when I'm suffering through some awful drive you occasionally cross my mind it's my hidden hope that you are still among them well are you? " conor, my hats off to you for yet another amazing song
i think this may be one of the few not extremely heartwrenching bright eyes songs...this was the first one i ever heard and i fell in love.
the music in this, gorgeous, and that one line, the title, it is constantly stuck in my head ... this is a great band that deserves a bit more attention. and i agree w/anyone who loves the song titles, they're fantastic.
