M Lyrics

Hello image
Sing me a line from your favourite song
Twist and turn
But you're trapped in the light
All the directions were wrong

You'll fall in love with somebody else
Tonight

Help yourself
But tell me the words
Before you fade away
You reveal all the secrets
To remember the end
And escape someday

You'll fall in love with somebody else
Again tonight

Take a step
You move in time
But it's always back ...
The reasons are clear
Your face is drawn
And ready for the next attack

I'm sorry to say but you're all quite clearly wrong. M is the name of Fritz Lang's seminal film about a child killer in 1930s Germany (I think it's Dusseldorf, but you'd have to check yourselves to be certain). You can tell this quite clearly by the lines: "You'll fall in love with somebody else Tonight" (The child killer says that he can't help what he does - not unlike love)

"And ready for the next attack" (Attack another victim perhaps?).

Obviously it isn't solely about this film and resonates quite effectively as a love song, however the title's origin is in the Fritz Lang film, not his future wife.

@The_Rebours Totally. Once you see the movie, all the pieces fit. Things like

Sing me a line from your favorite song Referring to the song the murderer used to whistle while kidnapping the girls.

Twist and turn But you're trapped in the light All the directions were wrong Something like "you guys try everything you can to find the murderer but you all can see (hence "trapped in the light") and pay no atention to sounds because of it. That's why all your clues are useless, wrong". Remember, the one who found out who the murderer was, was a blind man...

I'm wondering how this song could be about his wife and have lyrics like "You'll fall in love with someone else agian tonight." Could it have before they were serious maybe?

Or maybe it's just stating that there's a difference between loving someone and falling in love with someone?

I love the "Hello Image" bit. It's from Baudelaire isn't it? I don't know which poem. It's also in A Happy Death, by Albert Camus, which Robert lists as one of his favourite books. And I'ma agree with everyone else: it's about Mary.

This is one of their best tunes. I adore Robert Smith's wife for inspiring all these great songs (lovesong, just Like Heaven, Pictures of You, et cetera.) she is quite possibly one of my favourite people on the planet.

"Did you write the following with anyone inparticular in mind?" "Mary" (Cure News 3 - September 1987)

Yep, it's about Mary....

yes this song was written before they were serious. at least, i think so. Robert and Mary got married in 1988. This song appeared on 17 Seconds in 1980 i believe. I dont think they were dating then, but i could very well be wrong. Perhaps its about her falling in love with someone, anyone, but Robert. We all know how that feels, eh?

@ZombieCultHero they've actually been dating since they hooked up at a party when they were both 15. thanks for the interpretation though!

maybe it's about mary, yeah... but i think this song could actually apply to someone who's speaking to himself, someone who realizes he's ready to live again...
