Working In The Coal Mine Lyrics

Working In A Coalmine

Well I’ve been workin' in a coal mine
(Goin' down, down)
Workin' in a coal mine
Woo, about to slip down
Workin' in a coal mine
(Goin' down, down)
Workin' in a coal mine
Woo, about to slip down

Five o'clock in the mornin'
I'm up before the sun
When my workday is over
I’m too tired for having fun

Well I’ve been workin' in a coal mine
(Goin' down, down)
Workin' in a coal mine
Woo, about to slip down
Workin' in a coal mine
(Goin' down, down)
Workin' in a coal mine
Woo, about to slip down

Lord, I am so tired. How long can this go on?

Well I’ve been workin' in a coal mine
(Goin' down, down)
Workin' in a coal mine
Woo, about to slip down
Workin' in a coal mine
(Goin' down, down)
Workin' in a coal mine
Woo, about to slip down

Five o'clock in the mornin'
I'm up before the sun
When my workday is over
I’m too tired for having fun

Lord, I am so tired. How long can this go on?

(I’ve been a) workin’
and goin’
workin’
Woo, about to slip down…

Actually, this is a cover of an old R&B song written by Allen Toussaint and originally recorded by Lee Dorsey. Devo may have chosen it for its blunt honesty and simplicity about blue-collar America but there's definitely not any sexual innuendo.

I agree, and because of its simplicity I always loved this song...it's my Devo favorite. And due to the decade, I doubt it would be about sex due to it's use of the word 'Lord' thoughout the song. Actually, just reading/hearing the lyrics I know it's not about sex.

Gotta dissagree with you there. Devo's all about "Joe Average" and how the common man is devolving. I think this song suggests that man isn't living anymore, we've become like ants who work to make money. Ironically, the miner in this song doesn't even spend this money on having fun, because he's too tired.

Evolution? Nay sir, DEVOlution!

although this song seems to have a pretty straightforward connotation it seems to me that there is a sexual undertone, more specifically the act of giving oral sex to a woman. also the very repetitve rhythm of the song gives it a very constructed, ordered feel. maybe it's just me :-p but it seems like reasonable symbolism.

No way. Did you see the band's music video? And at the time this song was performed (no pun intended) oral sex with relation to a woman receiving was NOT as commonplace as it is now. Man, just your mention of "very constructed, ordered feel" makes me hope it's NOT about oral sex;)
