Flying Dutchman Lyrics
hey kid, I've got a ride for you
they say your brain is a comic book tattoo
and you'll never be anything
"what will you do with your life"
oh, that's all you hear from noon till night
take a trip on a rocket ship baby
where the sea is the sky
i know the guy who runs the place
and he's out of sight
flying Dutchman, are you out there?
flying Dutchman, are you out there?
flying Dutchman, are you out there?
straight suits, they don't understand
she tried, that one with the alligator boots
but the other side drew her in
heart falling fast when she left
even the milky way was dressed in black
take a trip on a rocket ship baby
the sea is the sky
i know the guy who runs the place
and he's out of sight
flying Dutchman, are you out there?
flying Dutchman, are you out there?
flying Dutchman
'cause they can't see what you're born to be
they can't see me
they can't be what they can't believe
they can't see what you see
keep the boys spinning in their own little world
time up and so we won't say a word
they keep the boys spinning in their own little world
so afraid he'll be what they never were
take a trip on a rocket ship baby
the sea is the sky
i know the guy who runs the place
and he's out of sight
flying Dutchman, are you out there?
flying Dutchman, are you out there?
flying Dutchman
'cause they can't see
'cause they can't see
'cause they can't see
are you still out there ?
they say your brain is a comic book tattoo
and you'll never be anything
oh, that's all you hear from noon till night
where the sea is the sky
i know the guy who runs the place
and he's out of sight
flying Dutchman, are you out there?
flying Dutchman, are you out there?
she tried, that one with the alligator boots

I can't believe no one's commented on this! This is definitely my favourite Tori song. Done in a classical style with several movements, its simply beautiful. ANd the lyrics, they make so much sense, and almost everyone can relate to them on some level. This song is phenomenal!
True, this sony is my absolutely most favourite of Tori Amos. The best musical work ever. Too bad it's not on any album. this song is the best.
"Flying Dutchman" was the name of a past ghost ship, a legend. Interesting tale, really. Wikipedia.com is a good site to read about it.
i used to was so obsessed with that song, but not so much anymore. the lyrics are great but there's some rawness in the music and in her voice i can't handle. i don't know, i just don't like it as much as i used to.
Reading the lyrics completely changed my view of the song. It's so great. My guess that it has to do with a musician's journey to another universe while playing the instrument and doing it by themselves no matter what other people (record company or teachers say). Their talent takes them away their own way like a rocket ship. Then the talent might as well be a gift from god or the universal consciousness and that's where she says "i know the guy who runs the place" and asks "flying dutchman are you there?" whithout actually thinking directly god but anything up there. What do you think?
