Never Seen Blue

I'm not sure about the meaning of the whole song, but "got a little red line that tells you, boy where the razor's been" sounds like a reference to self-injury.

oooh this song is two awesome how come there's only one comment? hm. that should change. anyway. i'm really confused about it i love it because i can relate maybe it is self harm or maybe its where she shaves (razor) and she mentions her legs oh idk. what does it mean what does it mean? where the birdie's been?

She's talking about a guy, and she adores him because he's strong enough to protect her, and also he's not scared or intimidated by her.

"Some boy you are to take me by the hand" - when she sings that it's like she sees a strength in him that not many other men have - a strength to take her proudly by the hand, put her on show.

And also "some boy you are to wear my color red, to wear it very proudly" - red is a strong, bold color, and when she sings that I think she's saying he's comfortable with being around her & her personality & such.

I do think there's reference to self harm ("where the razor's been"), or even abuse ("cross her legs where the birdie's been"), and perhaps she's weak because she's been abused or harming herself, and he's helping her. He "drives through" her again and again and helps her, makes her stronger.

also blue is a often seen as a 'boys' color, manly & protective. she's never seen the strong, protective side of a guy before.

It's one of the beautifulest song for me! It's so sad and emotional. I read somewhere that song is about self-injuring and i like that interpretation. I think it's also about love, which can save somebody from self-injury (just my interpretation). Blue means for me somebody's blue eyes. Isn't there: "finally be that woman that's been frozen in that pretty silver girl?" There's so many different lyrics in the internet... Somewhere there is even "blue SHE drives". And where is the end of the song: "Said now that I am Say goodbye to those left Say... " Doesn't that mean suicide?

I don't why, but I think she's talking about a transsexual... Specially in this part: "some boy you are are to wear my color red to wear it very proudly and wear it like a lady knows how to cross her legs where the birdie's been"

and the razor is only where he shaved the hair...

I'm pretty sure the razor line refers to the incident in real life when tori amos was raped by a man with a knife. she brings that up a lot in various ways in her songs, and that lyric is immediately followed by the man referencing a "violator," so I'm pretty sure it's got something to do with that.

I'm not sure about all the lyrics, but I think the song generally is about a man willing to love her despite the fact that she's "damaged" in this way, and he's willing to accept her to the fullest degree possible, making her at once this strong woman that she's made herself to be and yet incredibly vulnerable to him at the same time. very lovely song.

I read on hereinmyhead that Tori once admitted that this song is about her husband.

With that in mind (plus some of the previous comments), when I listen to this I think she's talking about falling in love with this man who is different from any other man she's been with. He's bold enough to "take [her] by the hand through an elevator" and also to challenge her self-destructive tendencies (ex. "where the razor's been"--which I think is about self-harm like others have said and "you said, girl, if you think you can turn that violator"--which I think goes back to something Tori said in an interview once about having all these bad romances with "bad boys" because she was trying to vicariously experience their shadow lives instead of delving into her own. It's like he's warning her that these bad relationships are violating her and she needs to stop trying to turn theses guys into better boyfriends or lovers.)

This guy is also more connected to his feminine side. For Tori, I feel like red is associated with this feminine fire and passion especially considering this was written during the Pele era. So this color combined with the fact that he can "wear it like a lady" suggests to me that he's proud to tap into this femininity or anima, which is another thing she's not really seen in a guy before.

Lastly, this guy sees her in a way that no other guy has seen before which is what I think the chorus is about. That's where I think the "in and around and through me again" line comes from. He sees past her masks and her scars into who she is at the core and it's really surprising yet lovely for her.

I just really found this song this past week when Tori sang it at the concert I went to and now I absolutely love it. It's such an adorable tribute to a relationship without being extremely sentimental or cliche.
