Beulah land
got a wasted gun
licorice man
I'll sum you up
thumbs up
got something in that sand
beulah girl
you been hitchin me up
got some candy
and a sweet sing
give me religion
and a lobotomy
beulah land
you beautiful whore
tell me when
i don't need you anymore
said that somewhere
you're gonna get something here
so you're right in the middle
and then i'm you
something is coming back again
i said
you
maybe i don't wanna go to where you're not, and so
beulah land
gonna find me a worm
a place to bathe this body on down
got a rubber board
and a crocodile
gonna float
on past your home
say when
just say when
just say when.

This song to me is about the religion, the confusion that surrounds it and the concept of hope; this song reflects that it's necessary. So, as a background first - Beulah Land is mentioned in the Bible as a reference to marriage, but I think this song references the hymn called Beulah Land, in which it is referred to as heaven, the promised land, the land of milk and honey. If you ask a southerner what/where Beulah Land is, I can pretty much guarantee you that they will say it's Heaven. I feel that it's used in that way for this song.

Beulah Land - (promised land, heaven) Got a wasted gun - (what reason is there for living?) Licorice man- (it's sweet, it's old, it's kitsch, it's so many things.) I'll sum you up (^)

Thumbs up Got something you're not sayin' Beulah Girl You've been hitching me up (pulling me towards you - drawing me in)

Got some candy (we all use things that pacify us, distractions) And a sweet sayin' 'Gimme religion and a lobotomy' (religion is confusing, it's easier to laugh it off and say it's too confusing to wrap your head around. it's overwhelming, why not just say haha, let's forget about it for now?)

Beulah Land You beautiful whore Tell me when I don't need you anymore (now this is the most poignant line of the song. Heaven. the promise of heaven and eternal life and the sweet by and by just spreads itself out over all generations and past and present. it's just for everybody, isn't it? and logic says there is no heaven. and her father preached it into her... but she made that separation long ago. so why now? why does she still feel the need for it? why is it still so necessary and the pull so intrinsic? tell me when i won't need this promise, when i can go on without this eternal hope. it's something else, this line.)

And said that, somehow, You're gonna get something here So, you're right in the middle And then I'm you Something is coming back again I said Maybe i don't wanna go To live where you're not So... (it's this way and that way,

Beulah land Gotta find me a warm Place to lay this body on down Got a rubber boat And a crocodile Gonna float on past your home

And say when Just say when Just say when.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
